WHAT DO YOUR 2018 GOALS DO FOR YOU?
Few things irritate me more than the (albeit well-meaning) suggestion that goals should be “realistic.” Anyone who suggests such a thing mistakes GOALS for TASKS.
In the words of Steve Chandler, “It’s not what a GOAL is that matters. It’s what a goal DOES that matters.”
Your GOAL has one primary job: To give you a measurable (and INSPIRING) target.
So, as you look at your goals for 2018… forget what the goals ARE for a minute. And for the love of all things HOLY, forget whether ANYONE would think they were “reasonable” (whatever that means).
Instead, look at them again and ask the IMPORTANT questions:
- Does this goal INSPIRE me?
- Will this goal PUSH me to do more?
- Will this goal force me to get outside of my own comfort zone?
- Will this goal REQUIRE me to GROW in order to reach it?
- Will this goal get me out of bed EARLY in the morning because I can’t wait to work on it?
- When I reach (or exceed) this goal will it feel like a FIST PUMP moment?
If the answer to ANY of these questions is, “NO…”
In my opinion, your “goal” is really nothing more than a TASK… something on a TO DO list… something to check off… a boring “next step.”
Yuck.
So, what do YOUR goals DO for you?
For the record, I’m ALWAYS aiming for the unreasonable. Always. Nothing less than “unreasonable” is worthy of my effort. Average and mediocre and “reasonable” bore and infuriate me. =)
