3 Things That Have Changed About Blogging for Profit
#1: There are more PLACES to share your blog online, and infinite ways to REPURPOSE your blog content.
Back in the day, I “blogged” on a NING network. I did not have my own list at that time, and I did not have a blog feature on my website. STILL, I showed up and posted messages designed to empower, encourage and equip women entrepreneurs on that platform that was available to me.
Fast forward nearly two decades and I post my blog messages FIRST on Facebook, and then they are repurposed:
- as video blogs (See WomenWhoWOW.tv.)
- as quotes shared on Instagram
- as links on twitter
- as “spun” content on LinkedIn.
- as content on my own website.
- so much more.
Bottom line: there are more places to share our blog content… and infinite ways to repurpose and re-use it. Of course, all of these platforms are busier and LOUDER than ever before. So, it is of CRITICAL importance that you message or blog from a RUTHLESSLY and UNAPOLOGETICALLY AUTHENTIC space. Any “I say that too” sort of posts will be lost forever.
#2: There are more ways to DELIVER your blog’s message.
You can type it.
Or speak it. (Podcasting.)
Or video it. (Facebook LIVE, YouTube, YouTube LIVE)
Or make it into an image or cartoon. (Infographics, Instagram)
But, it’s still a message.
From YOU,
to your market.
From YOUR HEART,
to THEIRS.
Pick your favorite “mode” for delivery — or don’t.
Personally, I say “why choose?”
WRItING is my real gift, so I will choose to continue to share PRIMARILY through writing, but I have found that video blogging allows for more intimate connection and AUDIO blogging allows a more convenient way for my tribe to listen in on my thoughts.
#3: The Business Model Has Changed. (i.e. Even the BIG NAMES realize that they must SELL something in order to profit from blogging.)
It used to be common for bloggers to blog every day and sell clicks to other people’s stuff.. or to sell ads that would clutter their message with ways they could earn a penny or a quarter even if someone clicked on the ad’s link. (I go into my DISDAIN for this approach here.)
Today, even the BIGGEST names in blogging have begun DECLUTTERING their sites. Less (or NO) ads. Less (and more streamlined) JV offers. In favor of selling more of their OWN “mental real estate.”
#1 Way to Win the Search Engine Game.
A TON of the content aimed at bloggers is about winning the search engine game… a CRUEL game in which you are expected to figure out some algorithm that is DESIGNED to KEEP you from figuring it out and will CHANGE as soon as too many people figure it out. =)
Seriously, it’s a cruel game. I do NOT suggest playing it. Here are a few things that will NEVER change for bloggers intent on making money off of their blog:
- You want LEGIT sites linking to yours. Not the “back linking” strategy of yesteryear, but you do want strong sites referencing you.
- You want the rIGHT people to FIND you… but this does NOT mean they have to find you though search. In fact, in November, I did a training for Women Who WOW members on The 27 Ways to Circumvent the Search Engines And WIN Way More Than Page One Position. - Your search engine “game” will be won FASTER when you write about 1000 different angles on the SAME topic. Meaning, GO DEEP on your site. Stick to what you know best, and write about it from a thousand different angles.
- You want your site to be binge-worthy. So, link to other content on your site that the reader may find interesting.
- # 1 Way to Win the Search Engine Game: Don’t play it. Don’t WAIT passively to be found. Go out and DRIVE traffic to your own site.

Because EVERY SINGLE TOOL you may use to grow your business RELIES on content to fuel it. Social media, commercials, search engines, heck… even your yellow pages ad requires CONTENT to stay fresh and relevant. And with MORE NOISE than ever, your content is there to help you STAND OUT, COMMAND ATTENTION, and EARN TRUST.
Adam Witty, the CEO of ForbesBooks, said it most eloquently:
“No trust, no sale.”

- Do it daily;
- Blog authentically;
- Blog and SHARE your blog DELIBERATELY; including mentioning people deliberately, curating content that serves a very specific demographic, etc.
- Do not depend on search… go out and INVITE people into your content.
- Have something to sell and sell it. This means, ASK people to buy from you.
- Create multiple ways for people to take action. (Example: join WomenWhoWOW.com, message me privately, or come hang out on our Facebook group for women entrepreneurs with HIGH drive and HIGH integrity.)
- Have a powerful bio.. one that tells people WHY they should listen to you and live your brand OUT LOUD in your blogs.
