So, every year, with Diane White, I host a media event, bringing together a handful of top experts / authors / entrepreneurs in one room with the top decision makers from top media outlets.
This is very intimate event, so you get to know the media and they get to know you…
It’s BETTER than ANY meet-the-media event I’ve ever attended and it’s actually cheaper. Anyway, when we first began hosting this event, I was thinking that we’d have to LIMIT the number of PR / MEDIA people who attend. To me, it was such a no-brainer, and here’s why. My thought was that — if I SOLD media services, and got invited to attend — I’d do the following:
💰 I’d IMMEDIATELY send an email to list to let them know that I’d been personally invited into a closed door event with the top decision makers from the top outlets including — but not limited to — The Kelly Clarkson Show, The Drew Barrymore Show, Dr. Oz, Rachael Ray, Entrepreneur magazine, Fox News and more.
I’d tell them that that during the first week of October, I’d be in a small room with these decision makers and have the opportunity not ONLY to get to know them better, hear what they are looking for, but also to pitch a handful of my clients.
I’d tell them that I was accepting applications and would choose 3-6 clients to personally represent at this event…. for a fee of $900. This is a STEAL for them and actually allows you to make money before you ever arrive in New York.
💰 Leading up to the event, as I got DETAILED emails with INSIDER information about how EACH of these media outlets prefer to be pitched, what they were looking for, and more.. I’d start dropping “truth bombs” about the media — and the CHANGES to the NEW WORLD of media — to my list. This is a great positioning play.
💰 At the event itself, i’d share pictures of me with those media outlet producers and editors, ESPECIALLY the pictures of us just hanging out on the swanky — private — rooftop bar event. Again, which PR person do YOU choose, the one who has personal relationships with these decision makers, or the one HOPING to make them?
💰 After the event, I’d be not only building my relationship with these media, but i’d be leveraging these real and personal connections I now had with the media to land MORE clients who wanted a more DIRECT route to this level of media exposure.
💰 Of course, I’d also follow through and get my clients national media exposure. 😊 because when you get clients on Dr. Oz, in the print pages of Entrepreneur magazine, on Fox News, on Sirius radio, and MORE — as we have done through this event — its simply EASIER to get PR clients.
ALL of these things work just as well for ANYONE in business development… So, you can imagine my surprise, when I’d invite PR people to attend this event and they’d say something about timing, lol… or some other “i’m gonna pass” excuse. I literally thought,
“Don’t worry… I won’t tell your clients that you had an INVITE to attend an event of this caliber, to grow relationships on THEIR behalf to get them NEXT LEVEL exposure… and you simply… passed on it.” KIDDING, of course… but you get my point.
To date, we have NEVER had a single person with a PR agency attend our live, in person event. Not once, which boggles the mind. We have had only TWO people who had a business development “bent” to their core offerings…
