I lost my job as a well-paid information technology manager. Devastated, depressed, demoralized, and disgusted I had to dig deep inside. The loss caused self-discovery. I read, studied, prayed (a lot), and decided to venture out on my own. Why not? What did I have to lose? Les Brown says, ‘when you fall, try to land on your back, cause if you can look up, you can get up’ and that’s what I did! I got up and I never looked back. I discovered it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Barbara H. In April 2021, I lost my mom unexpectedly. It was not easy to stay focused on running my design studio and raising two kids but I found a few things that helped. I talked to people and asked for advice (even though honestly, I didn’t want to talk about it). I was amazed by how many people shared in this type of loss and could offer words of comfort and encouragement. I also read books that resonated with my experience such as Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner and Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant. I’m still on my grief journey but by being open and seeking out support, I’ve found inspiration and hope.

I remember falling ill unto the point of being disabled shortly after I resigned from my job. I remember feeling on top of the moon at having the courage to demand my worth and charter my own path of success as an entrepreneur, only to feel as if that was taken away from me due to illness soon after resigning. But it was the experience during those times of disappointment and defeat that fuel me today and highlight my resilience. We inadvertently deleted our most important product and the entire funnel associated with it last year. In other words, we lost everything and had no backup. Consider the possibility of losing everything on a product that has been on the market for a year. Everything, including sales pages, graphics, emails, and other technical aspects of creating a digital product, had to be rebuilt from the ground up. That was, to put it mildly, devastating but we were able to do that within 48 hours! As a business owner, you will undoubtedly experience the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, and things will break, but the key is to preserve and recover as quickly as you can instead of giving up! I ran my business into the ground. I lead with an iron fist – exhausting my team, my clients and myself. The fruit rotted, the tree withered, and I was desperate to be uprooted and planted elsewhere. In a moment of defeat, I threw up my hands and relinquished control. That moment changed everything! I opened the door to wise counsel, hit my knees in prayer and rebuilt my team in humility. Today, I’m on a mission to show others that leading with love makes all the difference in the world. Courtney B. Riley is the Founder and CEO of Proximo Marketing Strategies. Atma interviewed over 1000 practitioners, different practices they offer for different health concerns the average person may have. This research showed jaw breaking stats: our system is broken, 90% of healthcare money is spent on preventable chronic and mental issues, healthcare is not wellness – consumers just don’t know who/what/where to turn to. One of the biggest takeaways here – is educating our consumers on the options they have, the problem they are facing, and providing them the exact solution.”

It was a tough blow losing my biggest on-going account. I cried, then got mad, then rolled up my sleeves the very next day and took on the world in a whole new way. Redefined, refocused, recalibrated, pulled up my big girl panties and forged ahead like never before AND it worked. I replaced that business with even more business AND that client came back a few months later and they are even more profitable for me now. Business is for the solid hearted was a lesson I learned before starting up my business. I knew from the beginning that failing is inevitable but quitting was never an option. I faced discouragement and defeats just like every business person, but I could come back for different reasons. First and foremost, I have a “strong why” – to have time freedom. I’ve worked as an employee for over 15 years and never had time for myself and my family. When I failed, I remember the slavery experience I had as an employee and started again. I had friends I talked to. They encouraged and motivated me. As a spiritual person, prayer and the word of God helped me too. I identified where I made mistakes, what I did and failed not to do. I set up a better SMART business goal and didn’t take everything together at once. I started with small goals and worked only with motivated persons as my past colleagues couldn’t encourage me when things weren’t going well.

There have been times when I felt discouraged because of comments from others claiming kids can’t make a difference. However, since it was the loss of two loved ones who first sparked my organization, looking back on cherished items that remind me of them never fails to motivate me. Also, seeing the true difficulties those we aid go through further encourages me to push through difficult patches. It’s so important to reflect back to find the true reason of why you started in the first place. Olivia Zhang is a 16 year old rising junior at McLean High School. I’ve experienced periods of doubt throughout my entire entrepreneurial journey – whenever I come up with a new idea or want to get to another level, that resistance or “self-sabotage” creeps back in and gets in my way! I play my “overnight hypnosis playlist” on iTunes to knock out those limiting beliefs while I sleep daily. For me, it’s essential to keeping a positive frame of mind (especially since, first thing in the morning and last thing at night, your subconscious mind is most receptive to change). The playlist has about 32 tracks, and it keeps my momentum going- tracks like overcome your fear of public speaking, sales mastery, ultimate confidence and self-esteem, etc. This is a major key to my progress.

Trampled and Terrified. An attack by students ended my 30-year career in education and left me dealing with PTSD and physical injuries. This trauma was the catalyst for my reinvention. I had to let go to go on and moved from being a victim to a victor. Resilience and grit gave me the strength to reinvent my life and start my business in my mid-50s.

The hardest season of my career as a business owner was last year during Q4, the presidential election, and COVID. What happened? We lost 3 of our highest paying clients in 2 days, with little savings and right when the company finally seemed to beheading in the right direction. What did I do? I went back to the basics and persevered doing everything in my power to talk to everyone I could, even going door-to-door. My back was against the wall and I had to do anything and everything to keep things afloat. After much anxiety, crying myself to sleep at night, and knowing no one was coming to save me, after two hard months of back-to-back sales I scored 4 new clients in 1 week… and business has never been better. In the beginning of my business and building my website I spent so much time agonizing over images, messaging, and content. When I officially launched the website it was crickets! I would refresh my Google Analytics every day looking for an uptick in traffic. I dug my heels in and learned how to drive traffic to the site, both organic and paid, and shifted my focus to analyzing and improving driving traffic instead of my daily visitor count. I’ve had too many “moments of doubt” to count! Lying in bed thinking I was having a heart attack. Sitting at my desk at 12am realizing I needed to (no joke) quintuple business in four months to pay bills. Crying in the parking lot over lost clients. I’ve gotten through because I ONLY allow people into my life that constantly see the potential in me and uplift me. I am also exceptionally clear and passionate about my why and carefully guard boundaries for self-care so I can stay energized.

As a mom and a business owner, I used the pandemic to really reflect on how much time I have and how to make the most of it, especially with a kid now home from school. It was truly this honest assessment of my life’s priorities that led me to turning my in-person food tours to an even more successful virtual events business. I can now do corporate team building events with groups all over the county – and the world – something I never would have been able to do before. Plus, I get to do them from home, without the need for babysitters and sometimes with a cute mini-assistant seeing his mom be her own boss.

To overcome feelings of doubt, I started a folder on my laptop of nice things people said to me about my work. Whether it’s an email from a happy client or a message from someone praising my work, I save it and add it to my “nice words” folder. Whenever I feel doubtful of my abilities, I head into that folder and read through all the kind words. It’s a little ray of sunshine and brightens my mood every time I open it up. A Mentor asked me: “While it took you 10 years between graduating college and building your business, how did you stay committed?” I had no idea! So I jumped back into my 34 year old mind and discovered that my belief in myself was bigger than the obstacle. Because I identified this for myself, it’s become a core principle that I’ve lived by ever since. How do you stay committed? Do that!

Finding my Pack. Seriously, when I felt like I was at a stand-still in my career, my father had just suffered a traumatic brain injury, and I was temporarily renting space in Austin to be closer to him, I felt like I didn’t have the energy or motivation to push through. After I met another woman entrepreneur for coffee, I felt alive, determined, and on-stride again. I cannot more highly suggest the power in surrounding yourself with bold and driven people. When I faced a tough season of defeat, something that really helped me was connecting with other entrepreneurs. When I did this, I realized that almost every entrepreneur out there faces doubt at some point. Entrepreneurship is difficult and doubt is normal. I took this information and decided to connect more frequently with other entrepreneurs that I could lean on if I ever felt this way again. These connections helped to bring forth more clarity, and ultimately, success. Morgan is a video production business owner and content creator within the digital marketing niche! In my first 6 months of business, I barely made over 2,000 dollars and I really wanted to quit my dream and get a 9-5 so I could feed myself and my struggling family.. However, instead of giving up I took a step back and re-evaluated not only my business but myself! I studied marketing and design books, walked around with a notebook, and wrote down anything that came to mind and inspired me. Finally, I re-branded and relaunched my website. In my biggest season of doubt I was faced with deciding between continuing a position that no longer felt aligned but on paper was a “great job” and striking out on my own — this is a decision that would reshape my entire life and career. During this time what helped me make this leap and get back on my feet was creating a daily reflection practice. For me, took the form of exercising, meditation, or sitting consciously with coffee, or journaling, but the most important part was setting aside time to honor this decision by giving myself time to think and feel it through.

My season of doubt happened when the collagen water I formulated was copied by a much larger brand that had received a multi million-dollar investment. I ultimately decided that while they could copy my product they couldn’t copy my story, message, and connection I’d built with my customers and audience. I learned so much from the experience and ultimately kept going and reimagined my brand. Entrepreneurship means constantly learning, adjusting, believing in yourself and growing.

When dealing with disappointment, discouragement, and defeat, I first analyze what went wrong or has changed and then look forward. In looking back, I evaluate what I should have done differently and avoid the blame game. Then I look forward. I focus on solutions, different strategies, and innovative tactics to take advantage of anew reality and eliminate past errors. My approach is like driving a car: Most of the time I look in front of me, but I also have an eye on my rear view mirror. The daily challenges that female founders such as myself teach us valuable lessons or encourage us to reinvent ourselves. As a way to overcome challenges, addressing failure is a step to learning and improving oneself. We often fear failure, but this should not be the case. Failure teaches us valuable lessons along our road to success; without it, we may be going in blindly without the knowledge we gain by committing mistakes.

It is easy to get sucked into hustle culture today and to think you need to be constantly productive. Over the years I realized I need to learn when to take a break. I make sure that I have at least one free day a week and take a couple of days off every few months. Every time I give myself time to rest and recuperate I come back to work full of new ideas and more motivated than before. There is a reason why every workplace has paid time off.

I’ve certainly had to face tough times during my entrepreneurial journey. But one of the most challenging ones came during the pandemic. I was hit by depression. This put me in a position where my motivation levels were so low that I couldn’t do any of the things I’ve planned. What really helped was stopping, accepting what I felt, and most importantly, seeking professional support. With time, I was able to complete simple tasks, which helped me gain momentum and return to my motivated self. Reminding myself of the people who rely on my company and me is my way of overcoming defeat. It’s no longer about me. When I give up, they will also suffer the consequences of my actions. That being the case, I will feel more guilty by giving into a defeat easily because other people will be affected. Jaya Aiyar, Founder & CEO at Créatif and Créatif Franchise. |

When Chargebacks911 first launched, we took an accelerated approach for everything. It was a breakneck pace that worked for a startup, but as we grew more established, we quickly realized it was simply not sustainable. There were moments I doubted we would ever reach a place of stability. I think what kept us going was that we truly believed in what we were doing. I had always dreamed of being an artist. My moment of defeat came when I listened to the naysayers, who said I would never make a living from my artwork. That’s when I stopped doing what I loved and instead focused on getting a “real job” and climbing the corporate ladder. I spent several years doing this and was never truly happy. Finally, I said enough was enough and I quit my job and dedicated myself 100% to pursuing art as a career, something I had never done before. By quitting my job I was able to fully immerse myself in my artwork and was completely dedicated to it. Instead of taking baby steps I went for the full plunge and I gave myself no other options but to succeed. It was tough at first, but it wasn’t too long before I got a few big breaks, overcame my defeat, and I now enjoy earning a living doing what I love.

I’m a copywriter, and I started my business in my car, while I was working as a care worker. I pitched for many jobs, and I was rejected EVERY time.. Then I started writing pitches and cover letters that were less ‘professional’, and much more ME. More irreverent, more fun, and kind of loud. Like me. Less ‘I’d love to be considered for the position’ and much more ‘Let’s smash your copy in the face with love and GENIUS.’ I started getting the gigs. The lesson? Be you. Always. Everywhere.

The biggest season of doubt that I experienced actually arrived during my initial decision to launch a business. During those early days, I had identified a clearly underserved market but was still plagued by feelings of self-doubt that made taking the initial plunge arduous and terrifying. To get through that doubt and find success, I had to learn to be okay with the unknown and rely on a strong belief in myself and my vision in order to create something that I knew was missing in the world.

When I started Capitalixe, I experienced a lot of rejection. I was up against more established companies and was a female founder in a male-dominated industry. Many of my colleagues believed I’d fail. Some even said I didn’t belong in the industry. So when these rejections occurred, I doubted myself. Founders, particularly women, need to be resilient. Things will go wrong. But I turned every rejection into a lesson and constantly adapted my approach. I persevered through the tough times.
