My clients come to me because they want to make more money in their business. Some come when they’re “busy and broke.” This means they’re doing all they know to do, but it’s “just not working” for them. Others come when they’re ready for some leverage. This means they want to make money even when they don’t physically “show up.”
Either way, they come when they want more money. My business is as crass as that. My expertise is as limited as that. As a result, my focus is laser-sharp, which brings me to Key #1 to Increased Income:
1) Be a specialist.
Be a (real) specialist. Do you know what a “charlatan” is? It’s best defined as a FRAUD who makes showy pretenses to knowledge or ability. You don’t want to be THAT. But, be a specialist. What do you KNOW better than anyone else? What do you DO better than anyone else? Specialists make more money than generalists — but only in EVERY industry.
ACTION ITEM: If you’re NOT making the money you want to make, take another look at your website and marketing materials. (And maybe this blogpost here.) But, look. Are you listing 18,000 areas of expertise? Are you the marketing guru, graphic designer, assistant, data entry wizard and productivity expert? If so, THIS is a major problem for you. Specialize. Maybe you CAN do all of those things reasonably well…. but what do you specialize in? What is YOUR specialty? DECIDE. And lead with that. (And watch your income soar.)
2) Slow down.
Slow down to make more money. If you’re moving too fast, you’re not going deep enough… You’re having shallow meetings, shallow conversations, shallow plans, and shallow relationships. Slow down. Dig Deep. Because THAT is where the gold is.
Quick hint: Life & business are also much more enjoyable this way. =) Just sayin’…
3) Spend 30% of your time each week connecting with people who COULD & SHOULD be referring clients to you.
Now, this seems like a lot, I know. But if you’re not making the money you want to make, you have two choices. You can keep doing things the way you’re doing them now, or you can do them my way! lol… Seriously, why not make a list of businesses / associations / organizations that should be referring to you??? And forming deliberate relationships with the owners of those businesses?
So, if you’re an HVAC technician, spend time with general contractors, plumbers and real estate agents. If you’re a plastic surgeon, spend time with divorce attorneys (funny, but so true!) financial planners and personal trainers. If you sell promotional products, spend time with business coaches, tax specialists, bookkeeping firms and trade show coordinators. You get the idea, right?
So, there you have it: 3 keys to more money. Implement one to see sustainable increase. Implement all three to see FAST & sustainable increase.
