One of the most, offensively boring games I ever played as a kid was “Mother, May I?” I wasn’t AS bold back then as I am now, but I’d stand there (maybe 5 or 6 years old) perplexed and INSTANTLY irritated by the entire concept… the whole premise… of the game.
We collectively and knowingly put one person in charge… and then asked for permission to do everything?! Seriously? I literally couldn’t get over it.
But I see some of that game being played out in business today and have — admittedly — engaged in it a bit myself. This whole notion of waiting to be appointed.
Marching in place,
whilst trying
or maybe not even really trying…
but HOPING to
get the attention of the right people.
Eventually, though, I always came back to my core irritation of the “Mother, May I?” And EVENTUALLY, I just said SCREW IT.
and Screw THEM!!
I wanted to be on stage… but no one wanted me on their stage. I was a nobody.
So, I built my own stage.
I hosted my own events.
Put myself in the leader seat.
I wanted to be written about in the media.
But, no one cared about me in the media.
And so, by God, I BECAME the media.
I started writing my own pieces that eventually were syndicated nationally.

In a very small group setting, you’ll — we’ll — be hanging with producers from Sirius radio, Fox News and The Dr. Oz show… the producer who launched Hoda with Kathie Lee… and more. Because the media is a HUGE factor in leapfrogging your business. I know it SHOULDN’T matter…. like popularity SHOULDN’T matter in high school… but it does. Media matters a lot. Long story short, I just STOPPED waiting and asking for permission… I stopped waiting to be noticed or recognized. I stopped waiting — like some 1950’s chick at the school sock hop — to be asked. I just went in and took the microphone.
No more mother may I.
No more marching in place.
No more asking for permission.
No more waiting to be appointed or recognized or rewarded.
I literally did a PR Campaign on THIS headline: “SCREW THE BIG NAME BUSINESS GURUS. ENTER: MAIN STREET AMERICA’S BUSINESS STRATEGIST.”
I was DONE with the mother may I dance.
