Call me superficial if you must. Make me out to have “out of whack” priorities if you will. BUT the success and longevity of your business, the degree to which you can continue to make a difference in your industry HINGES on you being able to sell.
Look, EVEN IF you have your bills paid elsewhere (a benevolent husband or ex-husband, a generous trust fund or even a lottery win) you MUST create a professional exchange in the market place if you are to remain in business. If you GIVE IT ALL AWAY in some misguided attempt to be “above selling,” or “not all about selling,” your IMPACT will be limited because you’ve literally not secured BUY IN from your market.
And make no mistake.
They’re paying someone…
maybe not YOU
but someone. And the person they’re paying, the products they’re buying carry MORE WEIGHT in their minds / lives than what you’re giving away.
Because free is OFTEN dismissed as lacking value.
But, honestly… I think MOST here make NO apologies for selling and for getting paid what we’re worth. If this is you… here are THREE ELEMENTS that will help you become your own SALES WHISPERER.
KNOW WHO YOU’RE SELLING TO.
I have long been quoted as saying, “She who knows her market most intimately, wins.” I have a list of things you NEED TO KNOW about your market AND a two question “quiz” to see if you know your market WELL Enough. Let me know If you want them.
But, before you start SELLING them,
HONOR them, by getting to know them.
It’s common courtesy to know who you’re selling.
Know what makes them tick, what makes them mad, what they really want and what is BEHIND that desire. Also know what they’ve tried before and why it didn’t work.
Selling is simply a conversation.
And conversations are better when each side takes an interest in the other. You should be NATURALLY CURIOUS about the people you hope to serve.
When you TRULY KNOW your market,
you can speak to their hearts,
to their secret desires (and fears)
to their deepest longings,
and their most intimate hopes.
This is helpful whether you’re selling weight loss, life insurance, legal services, medical care, coaching or healthy living products. In other words, it doesn’t matter WHAT you sell. If you don’t know them intimately, you’ll never be their sales whisperer, creating offers that light them up at a price point that makes them say YES right away.
REPROGRAM WHAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT SELLING.
Many entrepreneurs dread selling. They LOVE when they make a sale — of course — but the idea of NEEDING sales or going into a season of “launching” or filling an event or whatever fills them with dread.
This is because sales often feel heavy, needy, desperate, or even … GREEDY. It feels too vulnerable. It opens us up to rejection and — in some cases — even judgement.
But we get to CHOOSE our beliefs about selling. So, consider swiping and adopting a few of THESE views:
Selling is generous. It offers people an option they wouldn’t have otherwise.
Selling is a worthy HABIT. Many have fallen INTO a belief that if you just did a sales push or launch, you should “stop selling” for a while. But consider that for a minute. Imagine one of YOUR favorite places. Starbucks. The LV Outlet. Your favorite nail spa. Imagine getting excited to pop in to “get your fix” only to find a note on the door,
“We sold a WHOLE BUNCH this past weekend, so we’ve decided to close for the day so we’re not constantly selling to you.”
Now, you’re pissed, right?
You wanted your bag… your coffee… your nails done.
Selling is a GENEROUS HABIT.
But selling is ONLY an invite. No big deal, just a kind, thoughtful gesture. It’s generous and courteous to invite people and to have NO ATTACHMENT to their response. You ever invite someone to a destination wedding when you know that they can’t come? You invite them anyway. WHY? So they KNOW they were invited.
Consider your sales asks an invitation. But not ONLY an invitation into your program or office or product line. ALSO an invite into the PROMISE on the other side of whatever it is that you sell… It’s an INVITE into something they really want and will benefit from.
HAVE (SIMPLE) SYSTEMS & MARKETING ASSETS THAT PREDICTABLY CREATE THE FOLLOWING :
Sales on Demand. You need to have evergreen and proven invite language and packaging that you can UNLEASH when you need an infusion of cash.
Sales on Repeat. You need systems in place that allow repeat payments to come in regularly, so you can BANK on them. Literally.
Sales on Schedule. You need systems, simple funnels, and routines that compel income to come to you on YOUR schedule and on A pre-determined schedule.
