Every time the mainstream media posts another story of a higher court protecting an entrepreneur’s right to refuse service to a gay couple, I am torn.
You see, I think the courts got it right… legally. But morally… these “faithful” business owners, aren’t just wrong, they’re doing the opposite of what we are called to do as Christians.
Before you write me off as some liberal, new age, prosperity preacher you should know that I am none of these things. I read the same Bible as you. I grew up in a red carpet Baptist church, like you. I believe in heaven and hell, in the sanctity of marriage and human life, and in the Great Commission.
And what you are doing isn’t just turning people away from our God, but misrepresenting Him and twisting His words to make yourself look morally superior, while — of course — believing yourself to be exactly that.
Because we share the same faith, I urge you to consider the message you are sending, and the role you are — wrongly — taking.
I have only one question for you:
How dare you?
You have an opportunity to share God’s love with someone and you reject them… in the name of God? That wristlet you wear says, “What would Jesus do?”
Answer: not this.
Are those gay and lesbian couples sinners?
Yes they are.
The EXACT same as you and I sin on a daily basis.
The same as that couple who hires a stripper for their bachelor party.
The same as that woman marrying a man for his money.
The same as that man who’s marrying a woman while still sleeping with someone else.
The same as the couple living together.
I could go on.
But, I’m guessing you don’t ask about these “sins” before you decide whether someone is worthy of your cake, balloons or wedding invitations.
Get over yourself.
As we are both saved by grace, I’m curious with how you so flippantly and so flamboyantly deny such grace to others?
You have stepped FIRMLY and UNAPOLOGETICALLY into the role of judge, a role God reserved for himself and himself only.
So, here you sit.
Raising awareness of OUR faith,
by choosing which sins are “okay” and which are not…
which are acceptable and which are not.
Ignoring the command to show God’s love to these people, to all people.
Denying the opportunity to be God’s hands and feet.
Shirking the responsibility to share the grace, forgiveness and acceptance that led you and I to the Lord…
and serving up rejection and condemnation instead.
You had an opportunity to embrace these people,
to show them the love of Christ which they may not have seen or felt before…
and you
turned
them
away.
It’s unthinkable.
Seriously…
Which conversation do you think will go on in eternity?
Why you baked a cake for someone who sinned differently than you sin?
Or why you didn’t share God’s love in your mission field: the workplace?
Would you turn a gay person away at your church?
You know what?
Don’t answer that.
I’m afraid of the answer.
