I love the movie The Other Boleyn Girl and have seen it countless times. One of the more memorable scenes — and there are many — is when Anne Boleyn confesses to her sister that her husband, the King, hates her. And — of course — that she’s having to “resort to ever more degrading things just to arouse him… and some nights,” she says, “he cannot EVEN do it.”
THIS from a woman who had CAPTIVATED this man,
THIS from a woman who at one time had SUCH a HOT relationship with the King,
THIS from a woman who had deliberately (and effectively) seduced him.
So, what happened?
Why could she no longer arouse him?
Why could he “not even do it?”
And WHY all of the sudden did she feel DEGRADED by acts that she — assumedly — once enjoyed?
And — perhaps more importantly — what could all of this possibly have to do with our business? And our marketing????
Well, I’m glad you asked. 😊
You see,
the foreplay, the sex WAS good.
At first.
But then, she started lying,
hiding,
pretending.
And she started stressing.
And all of this… kept building,
it was like a wall…
that was constructed brick by brick
between Anne Boleyn and the King.
Lie by lie, pretense by pretense,
a DISTANCE grew between them.
And this is exactly what happens in our business.
Marketing & selling CAN be fun, fulfilling, and exciting…. This is how it SHOULD be, this is how it CAN be. Your marketing CAN be something that not only makes money, but also attracts the RIGHT attention and the RIGHT people. And it should ALLOW you to show up naked and unashamed. NO costumes, just a fully empowered woman, being fully expressed in her business. This is how marketing SHOULD be.
(A lot like foreplay & sex.)
Unless — and until — it becomes marred and weighed down by pretense and lies and cover-ups. Unless and until you start hiding parts of yourself and your story trying to build some fictitious brand or falsified narrative. You know, to be relatable, to get attention, to manipulate people into the sale. Unless and until you begin dressing up SO much, you barely recognize yourself in the mirror.
Once you start down THIS path,
the one MANY marketing goo-roos would have you travel,
behaving like all the rest,
dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s
like a good little stepfordpreneur…
you’ll SOON feel like Anne Boleyn,
like you’re trying SO hard to arouse the market…
and some nights, you can’t EVEN do it. 😊
You’ll feel degraded by the lack of authenticity in your approach, you’ll start to resent your facebook lives because you’ve got SUCH A role to play, SUCH an image to portray… SUCH a pretense to keep up. You’ll start to be bored by your own machine-like actions…

Show up like this,
this many times,
with this mood/ tone,
wait this many minutes before you aCTUALLY say anything of value… you know, so that “more people jump on!”
uggggg..
This sort of “foreplay” with your market bores me to tears even discussing it. It’s predictable and boring and silly. But mainly, there’s no intimacy with it, no authenticity, no connection.
And therefore it will NEVER be what you want it to be.
YOUR marketing should NOT look like everyone elses, and if you do it RIGHT, it never will.
