I love this picture, but I hate the way my smile doesn’t go all the way to my eyes. I love this woman, but I hate the level of stress she carried. I love the life represented in this picture, but I hate the fact that there was this HUGE undercurrent of pressure and stress… nearly ALL financial.
Here’s the thing. I grew up thinking that money problems were solved by working hard. When people needed money, it was “shameful” because, you know.. “why aren’t they working?”
but I WAS working.
HARD.
Plus I was working while everyone else slept, either during nap times and / or EARLY mornings, like 2 AM, 3 AM were not uncommon, and 4 AM was standard.
I was NO slacker.
I have ALWAYS worked.
AND I wasn’t a spender.
And my husband always worked.
YET… we struggled financially so immensely. And anyone who says that money doesn’t matter is a liar. Money determines a lot of things.
Education opportunities.
Living conditions.
Health options.
Chris and I were unique in that we didn’t argue a LOT over money. When we had it, we were glad. When we didn’t have it, we wished we did. It was what it was. But it affected other relationships as I was constantly pre-occupied, running numbers, worrying, stressing.. praying ALL THE TIME that the check would come in the mail as promised.
Money stress is a unique stress… and one that working hard does NOT always solve.
I know too many women entrepreneurs who are working hard, doing all they know to do, feeling frustrated and resentful and FLAT OUT CONFUSED about why the sales are NOT coming as they should.
After all… they are AMAZING at what they do,
everyone seems to know who they are and what they offer,
everyone encourages them in their business…
but MONEY,
that critical piece,
just isn’t coming in.
At least not the way you deserve.
This woman is AWASH is opportunities… invites that ALL seem promising. She’s showing up and doing her part. Maybe going into debt to do so. And people seem to ALWAYS CHEER her content, at least until… she tries to sell something.
She hesitates before every launch because she’s unsure if she can take another failure. Financially… emotionally… sometimes it all feels so FULL ON.
Because that’s the other thing about money for women entrepreneurs. We KNOW that our income SHOULD line up with the IMPACT we provide, so we feel a certain way when no one wants to buy from or work with us. Maybe shame, maybe ANGER, maybe insecurity.
When money isn’t coming in, we don’t JUST doubt our business, we doubt ourselves.
So, I’m doing a thing.
