I remember reading something that summed up my entire “battle” with losing weight in just a few words, “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet.” To be clear, I wasn’t eating a bunch of “bad stuff,” just too much of the “good stuff.” And no matter how many miles I logged, no matter how many Beach Body workouts with my Mister, now matter how many spin classes I sweated my A$$ off in… I couldn’t get the body I wanted.
Until…
I addressed the NUMBER of (albeit) healthy calories I was consuming.
I’m not exactly NON-creative. I had tried to NOT do the entire calorie thing. Honest. I did the KETO thing, the ATKINS thing, the ZONE thing. (Zone was by far the best for me.)
But until I did the CALORIE thing, my weight was a source of utter frustration — and a visible failure — for me. I simply HAD to submit to the natural laws of the land… in order to be successful in it.
A similar situation is being played out on the battlefield of business… people ignoring the “natural laws” of being profitable in favor of what they would PREFER to do instead.
Before you hear what I’m NOT saying, I’m not talking about man-made laws. The ones that tell us how fast to go, or what to wear, or who the “right” people are to hang out with. Feel free to ignore all of that.
But, there are a few “sins” against the natural laws of profitable business that you commit at your own risk. Here are my top three:
SIN #1: Ignoring MINDSET. You simply can NOT out-hustle a wimpy, excuse-making, victim mentality, STUCK mindset.
You either have a GROWTH mindset that sees the world as expansive and opportunity – rich… a mindset that (as a habit) views EVERYTHING as a learning opportunity… OR
You have a stuck mindset, where you believe that you’re stuck in some pattern that you — the victim — have no control over…
You can be doing ALL the right things in business, but if your MINDSET is small, limited and fearful, you will FOREVER play small.
(As confession: I had a very small, risk-averse mentality about business for many, many years. It is what made business “hard” for me, what led me to create a “success” that I didn’t like. I was LIMITED by my own thoughts.)
Your Mental Toughness is the VEHICLE that you will ride ALL THE WAY to your own promised land. This vehicle must be strong, reliable, resilient and well-maintained… to go the distance. (If you want to see how I maintain my OWN mental toughness, join me here: http:// www.bmichellepippin.com/ mentaltoughness/
SIN #2: Ignoring FAULTY economics. Measurement MATTERS… and WHAT you measure matters. You will not be able to out-visualize or out-hustle or out-smart faulty economics.
In other words, your numbers MUST make sense. You can’t have a list or reach of 150 people and expect to generate a six figure income selling a $20 product. EITHER your income goal needs to be brought down (which I certainly don’t recommend) OR your reach OR your price must increase.
You have the MOST control over your pricing. I sold HIGH END boutique consulting NEARLY IMMEDIATELY. Why? Economics demanded it. My reach was too small to reach my income goals selling low end. Today, my reach is larger, so I can choose to sell at a lower, more accessible price point, (as well as at high end prices, to a fewer number of people.)
Always make sure your numbers (Price, People, Profit) make sense. HOPE is not a strategy here, people. I BELIEVE in miracles… I just don’t want to depend on them to keep my business afloat. Your numbers must ADD UP.
SIN #3: Ignoring STRATEGY. Your strategy for how you will 1) get attention, 2) convert leads and 3) serve clients / customers so well they bring their friends… must be SOUND, SIMPLE, CONSISTENT & FLEXIBLE.
You must KNOW how you’ll do all of this. It must make sense. It must be SIMPLE enough to be executed CONSISTENTLY, and it must be flexible enough to allow you to ebb and flow with your market.
P.S. Have you heard??? I’m doing a thing.
