So, you’re a coach.
If you are like most coaches, you have spent a lot of money on learning HOW to coach… becoming certified… THEN, when it was FINALLY time to build your practice, you’ve become frustrated and discouraged.

My name’s Michelle and while I’ve had a good deal of media, it’s very possible you don’t have any clue who I am.

Before we dive in, I want to acknowledge that I know you’re an amazing coach, mentor, consultant or strategist. I know it and YOU know it. You’re sold on the POTENTIAL of your practice. You know you can make it work. You know that people need what you offer and that you deliver what you promise.
The missing component: paying clients. Consistent paying clients. And clients who pay higher fees.
Don’t fall for any more smoke and mirrors. There’s no mystery to business… and no mystery behind growing a profitable coaching practice. But, if PROFIT is what you’re after (the CHA-CHING rather than the ATT-A-GIRL), you have to be willing to abandon business as usual. If you can handle being more “renegade” than “regular”… if you can take a reality-based view of business success (i.e. no sugar coating) you’re in the right place.

WHY I NEVER COACHED FOR FREE:
A MUST READ FOR COACHES IN SEARCH OF CLIENTS.
Side question:
CAN YOU CALL YOURSELF A COACH….
LET ALONE A **GREAT** OR
**TRANSFORMATIONAL** COACH…
WHEN YOU HAVE **NO**
OR VERY FEW
PAYING CLIENTS?
Short answer: no.
Long answer: Definitely not.
Although a lot of coaching programs
(and ONE program in particular)
seem to confuse this in the minds of their coaches.
In training, FINE…
when you’re trying to learn HOW to coach,
during the CERTIFICATION process,
if you want to make appointments with pseudo-clients, and “trade” coaching hours,
fine. (I guess.)
But, it always amazes me how many “coaching appointments” non-monetized coaches (coaches making NO money) seem to have. They’re “coaching” non-stop.
Anyone they talk to on the phone is a “client.”
“I’ve got three clients tomorrow.”
REALLY? THAT’S GREAT.
3 CLIENTS IS A GREAT START.
WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING?
“Oh, well… we were all trained together so we all still coach each other on the phone.”
WHAT???
If this thinking didn’t hold coaches back for SO LONG, I wouldn’t begrudge them this little fantasy of having ACTUAL “clients.” I’d be content to let them live in the land of make believe.
But, it DOES hold them back.
And it holds them back with an iron-like grip.
And it holds them back for a LONG time.
Here’s why… and then we’ll get to the solution:
👉 Coaching people (friends OR acquaintances OR those who trained with you) for free takes up a LOT of time that you could be spending with actual prospects.
👉 Coaching people for free allows you to FEEL like a coach without actually making a living as a coach. It’s like a dopamine hit that will always leave you empty afterwards. #discouragement
👉 Coaching people for free allows you to conveniently AVOID the hardest “work” of coaching, which is getting people TO the fee…. getting them to invest in THEMSELVES, in the TRANSFORMATION they seek, and in YOU as a guide. This is the REAL work of growing a coaching practice. Because what comes after that is SOOOOO natural to you, right?

👉 Coaching people for free — especially in an ongoing situation — often leads you to RESENT that person. They didn’t pay you, they may not be “doing the work,” and also you WANT to get paid… feel you SHOULD be getting paid, and you know what? If you’re “trading” the coach hat — coaching her one day and BEING coached by her the next day — she’s probably feeling the same way.
👉 Coaching people for free confuses friendship and conversation with coaching and commerce… and the result is that you begin to DEVALUE your own coaching…. which leads to you doing MORE of it for FREE… resulting in a vicious cycle. HINT: People who PAY do the work and get better results than those who don’t. Period.
👉 Bottom-line: Coaching people for FREE keeps you busy and broke. 👉
So, actually, it’s a fantasy that has long lasting negative consequences.
😢 Husbands / Wives mad that their spouse spent X on some certification or training and they’re STiLL not making money.
😢 Coaches who walk away from their dream because they feel they just can’t make a living doing what they KNOW they were born to do.
😢 And the discouragement that digs DEEP into the bones of a NON-MONETIZED coach can’t be overlooked. But I understand it.
I’ve been that coach.
Once upon a time, I tried being a life coach.
And look, I was a HORRIBLE life coach. I get it.
And I didn’t do it long because I SUCKED at it so bad…
But I did it long enough to know the PAIN
of being someone with so much to offer,
someone with so much potential,
but someone who felt UTTERLY rejected by the market.
WHY would one coach make it… and another not?
Why THEM and not me?
I used to think that I had to fancy my shit up.
That I should get my website fancier,
that I should decide what my POWER suit would be
and (actually) wear it in public,
that I should be more PUT TOGETHER
as a woman,
as a mother,
as a coach…
that I should be more PROFESSIONAL,
more “grown up.”
And, if you know me well, please don’t laugh.

at various times
to be FANCIER, more professional,
to be THAT coach.
Only, it didn’t move the needle in my business.
IT DIDN’T WORK.
in fact, it was KIND of like those
pseudo-clients you might be “coaching.”
It took time and effort and kept me SPINNING my wheels in vain.

👠 I figured out what I was REALLY selling as a coach.
HINT #1: I was NOT selling time. So, if you’re currently “selling” time…. as in “four 45 minute coaching sessions for $XXX,” you’re selling it wrong.

A BLUEPRINT FOR FINANCIAL SUCCESS AS A COACH.
Admittedly, I have a distinct edge in the online business world,
In the world of “coaching,”
In the world of getting paid for your “mental real estate.”
That edge is
plain and simple:
seniority.
I have been here a long time.
I have NEVER gone away.
I was here before fax marketing was outlawed,
I was here before Facebook became a thing,
I was here before coaching was popular,
I was here when coaching popularity grew to a FEVERED crescendo,
and I am here now.
I have seen many “big names” emerge,
retreat,
emerge again,
after what I call a “costume change.”
I have never gone away,
never swung into a phone booth to emerge a new brand,
with a new focus, and a new name.
Seniority matters, a lot.
My business gets to be simple.
I don’t get caught up in looking at what so and so is doing,
because I know a LOT of so and so’s who are here today,
BRIGHT AND SHINY,
and gone tomorrow.
I’ve seen too much of this to get caught up in it.
I also know numbers, and respect numbers.
Which is key.
But I’ll get to that in a minute.
I GET TRIGGERED.
Some may call it TRIGGERED AF. =)
And they’d be accurate.
I get triggered when people come to ME,
with ideas from OTHER “gurus”
and wonder why it’s not working for them.
Lol…
My PRIMARY advice is ALWAYS:
Pick Your Guru.
I can’t — and wouldn’t dare —
try to Michelle-ize someone else’s blueprint.
Mainly, I throw it out.
Because you’ve got to CHOOSE which horse to ride.
I know my horse.
I choose the strongest, sturdiest, most reliable horse.
I have NO interest
— none—
in the horse that does tricks or jumps or fancy footwork.
I choose the horse that i can COUNT on to run me STRAIGHT through the finish line, in the most direct route possible.
And also, because,
JUST UNDER THE SURFACE OF WHAT “THEY” WANT YOU TO SEE,
is something else.
Numbers.
Measurable representations of how well their crap works.
Example:
Look at her, she’s got 3500 members.
It’s super profitable.
Maybe I / you should ______________….
lol…
HOLY MOLY.
3500 of paying members is a LOT.
Color me #Impressed… UNTIL.
Impressed until I see that 3500 is less than 1/2% of her Facebook reach. LESS than 1/2 of a % conversion.
Impressed until I consider the size of her team,
the team busily spending Facebook ad dollars,
and staying on top of 13 funnels that are constantly being tweaked
to get her to what?
A 1% conversion rate.
Impressed until I consider that 1/2 of their fees go to affiliates.
Like the stars who make millions,
only to promptly file bankruptcy.
Impressed UNTIL.
My triggering moment?
THIS: Why don’t I go through the “stuff” to look more impressive online?
To look more fancy, popular, “more like a guru.”
Sometimes I beat myself up about it.
And then…
there’s the fact that….
I don’t need to. =)
IN fact,
truth be told,
I always THOUGHT I WOULD need to.
I ALWAYS thought I would make enough money to have some “breathing room” and then invest in someone or some thing or some program or some software to make me look
important,
polished,
fancy.
More like the “big shots”
and less like the “commoners.”
But then the money came in,
and based NEARLY WITHOUT EXCEPTION
it came in based on my
“look at my numbers” approach.
My INSANE conversion rate,
My DOLLARS per subscriber rate,
My SIMPLE
non-chaotic
approach.
Money came in based on me telling myself,
“Nah…. just ignore that.
You can do all of that later….
IF you want.”
I have too many success stories,
In my OWN world
of coaches who did the same.
Coaches,
working alone,
some with a website, some without,
NONE that are networking,
NONE using affiliates,
ALL doing HIGH multiple-six figures
without anything more than a part-time admin assistant.

is simply
to message from the heart — regularly —
and stay in conversations where you serve people,
and make EMPOWERED offers to help.
Muck this up TOO MUCH,
VEER too much into the “let me impress you” model of marketing,
and you will end up doing a BUNCH of HUSTLE,
for very little money.
For the record: Here are other ways you can muck this up:
- becoming needy… Needing THEM more than they need you,
- falling into the FRIEND category,
- falling into the “exposure” trap… doing a ton of work for free for “exposure”
- Not SELLING out to YOUR VALUE… when YOU aren’t anchored in your value, THEY won’t pay.
- Selling instead of serving during your conversations.
But all of these are conversations for another day.
So, keep it simple.
Don’t try to LOOK big,
don’t BEG for some big name’s attention,
Don’t continually shift your message waiting to get the one that “hits pay dirt.”
Instead,
stand tall,
SHINE from your SOUL,
and offer to help the people you are called to serve.

THE MOST OVER-TRAINED (& UNDER PAID) COACHES IN THE WORLD…
I get a lot of referrals from a particular “school of coaching” that produces what is possibly the world’s ABSOLUTE BEST coaches. Unfortunately, despite
- paying out more money for coaching and training than any other coaches I’ve seen;
- investing countless hours (OFTEN DAILY) on upping their skills as a coach, and
- doing the work they are TOLD to do….
they’re also the LEAST PAID coaches I meet. (And THIS is saying something, since there are a LOT of coaches who meet me in the less than $30K a year zone.)
These coaches are bloated with information, knowledge, and skills,
Not to mention heart, potential and drive.
However… their bank account remains anemic.
WHY? they want to know….
They see other coaches “making it.”
And they ALSO know that the training THEY have invested in
is FAR more sound and effective than MOST coach trainings.
PLUS,
these over-trained coaches…
have a NAME behind them.
A known name.
A brand name.
A name made NEARLY main street America famous.
They can say “I’m a ___________ _____________ coach.”
In fact, they even reasoned
— when first INVESTING in that coach training
and even for some time after—
that by associating THEIR business with THAT name,
they’d be able to accelerate their success.
And so,
like the AMAZING students that they are,
they attempt to
- shine light on a brand that is not their own;
- rely on a reputation built by someone else;
- sell trainings that COUNTLESS others are also being trained to sell; and
- follow a process that is designed to grow the BRAND and not necessarily the coaches building it.
Today, this brand,
this name,
is hitting a small, internal snag that will be a gaping hole within 12 – 18 months.
The snag?
The NAME they all bet on,
is growing more quickly than their trained coaches would like…
adding in more coaches daily
— MORE competitors selling the same stuff with the same system —
and adding new “niches” of coaching as well,
therefore DILUTING
— some would say bastardizing —
the core of the brand itself.
But that doesn’t concern me.
The coaches from this “school” who find me
IMMEDIATELY do things so differently,
that they will be unaffected.
In fact, they’ll grow quicker as a result.
I teach them how to HONOR themselves,
to build DEMAND for their own work,
all while standing FIRMLY in the training they’ve received.
I teach them what I teach all coaches:
how to sell what they’ve been trained to sell in a way that is UNIQUE to them, in a way that CAN NOT be duplicated by the next 600+ coaches coming out of the “exclusive” training THEY themselves invested in.
I shine light on all the ways they are building “the brand” instead of their OWN bank balance.
And so, they start to shift.
They start to make money.
And they then secretly go back to the circles within the “school” they come from,
and WHISPER
(fearing a BIT of judgement for going OUTSIDE of the school… After all, they have a SLEW of “peer coaches” they could have gone to for help.)
about HOW they are growing so quickly,
how they are MONETIZING — finally.
My secret?
Is no secret at all.
To sell ACCESS to you,
which is what coaching IS,
you MUST value YOU as part of the deliverable.
You MUST be willing to stand in front of your OWN flag.
You MUST be willing to build DEMAND for YOUR voice.
Because selling a “certified” echo of someone else’s voice is a BRUTALLY hard sell.

THE THREE PHASES OF SELLING EVERY DAY FOR COACHES
I get a lot of “looks” when I suggest the DAILY stuff.
Daily content.
Daily selling.
Daily showing up.
And — listen — if you want an average, mediocre, feast and famine business, showing up weekly and / or when you feel “inspired” will do just fine. But if you want MORE than that….
if you want to have an actual DEMAND for your work, where people are lining up to work with YOU…
if you want to dramatically increase NOT ONLY your income, but also your impact and influence…
Daily is the consistency you’ll need.
(Don’t shoot the messenger.)
But a lot of people WONDER what “selling every day” would even LOOK like. They think they don’t have something they can sell EVERY SINGLE DAY.
In fact, at Women Who WOW LIVE! 2018, I asked the audience to raise their hands if they felt like they didn’t HAVE anything to sell every day. A few raised their hands.
One, a coach.
What does she sell?
Coaching.
She said she didn’t have something to sell every day. So, I naturally assumed she was already booked solid as a coach. Because if you are NOT turning people away due to your own lack of availability, you can — and should — be selling coaching. Right?
I was wrong.
She was not booked solid.
And I reminded her that she could sell
— ahem —
coaching every day.
In fact,
THIS IS THE FIRST PHASE OF EVERY DAY SELLING:
Selling __________(insert whatever you sell)________ until you are booked solid. Selling until your practice is full.
Because I detest and abhor making ongoing appointments with people, my own “coaching practice” — when I was working 1:1 with clients — was QUITE “full” with 5 clients. =) So, “filling” my practice was FAIRLY simple.
Quick note: To be clear, I couldn’t afford to sell cheap coaching and work my way up. I had to start high-ticket… and frankly, I recommend it. Selling “cheap” coaching is actually harder than selling “expensive” coaching. This is because people who INVEST in coaching are high performance, high drive people. They TYPICALLY aren’t looking for the “cheap” coach. They’re looking for the RIGHT or the BEST coach.
But the first phase of selling every day IS the hardest. As you sell every day, you’ll be rejected some. People will say NO. People will ignore you. This is because you have not built ADEQUATE demand for your work… YET. This is because they think of you as “just another option” that they COULD choose if they feel like it. This is because they’re not afraid of missing out on working with you due to YOUR availability.
And also, this is because ANY TIME you sell every day, you’ll get some NOs. (As Steve Chandler reminded me early in my coaching career, “Yes LIVES in the land of NO… And there is no land of YES.”) Read that line again. It’s a writer down-er.
In Phase One, not ONLY will you get MORE Yes’s…. but the daily showing up will also allow YOUR MARKET to
1) recognize,
2) prefer and
3) DEMAND your voice.
So, even in Phase One, you’re building into Phase 2.
In Phase TWO of selling everyday, you continue to show up, message and sell every day. BUT, you’ve now increased your fees. You’re not just charging what you THINK they’ll pay. You’re charging what you WANT. You’re charging what you KNOW you’re worth.
Because, let’s be honest.
You’re already full.
If they said yes, you’d have to move things around to accommodate them, and if they say NO, you’re still booked solid and you’re fine with that too.
Phase Two is fun because you’re no longer waiting BREATHLESSLY for people to respond. You’re no longer wondering if your bills will be paid. You’re no longer wringing your hands wondering about the MAGIC WORDS to say when following up with a prospect to make them say YES….
In Phase TWO, your pricing begins to speak on your behalf.
Your confidence — as you continue to show up, message and sell daily — is palpable. And the market DOES sit up and take notice.
And finally, once you’re AS booked as you WANT to be,
charging what you WANT to make,
you get to Phase THREE…
where you’re building LEVERAGED income streams….
income streams that do NOT require you to trade time for money, income streams that allow you to convert the DEMAND you’ve been creating, into dollars.
And then… you keep going.
Showing up, messaging and selling every day.
It’s a beautiful journey really.

4 REASONS YOU’RE NOT GETTING COACHING CLIENTS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
I see a lot of coaches — and those in similar industries as well… Internet marketers. Speakers. Trainers. Copy writers. — spending a LOT of time on Facebook…They’re doing ALL THE THINGS.
Posting.
Sharing.
Quoting.
Commenting.
Asking “engaging” questions.
Using “message bots.”
Sponsoring posts.
Building out funnels.
Associating with those with “big lists” via online summits or interviews or whatever.
Using interesting / professional pictures.
And yet…
the answer to how they’re doing — in business — is dismal.
Some, feeling “scared” in fact.
Frantic about money.
Taking on part time jobs,
including driving for Uber,
taking on roommates to help pay the bills.
These coaches are insecure about their plans.
They’re unable to say YES to coaching that THEY want
because they have so FEW people saying YES to them.
DESPITE all the work they’re doing… DESPITE their effort, their tenacity and their consistency, social media is — plain and simple— JUST NOT paying off.
IN FACT, even their FREE offers seem to be falling on deaf ears. Forget any money making offers.
So, what gives?
Bad News / Good News:
The bad news is that if you are NOT making money on social media… YOU are the problem. =)
Simply put, you’re DOING IT WRONG. lol..
The good news is that there is a LOT of money to be made on Facebook, and there are very SIMPLE ways to turn this ship around.
If you are NOT getting clients with that little blue and white “f” icon, or the “I” for Instagram — or wherever else you’re hanging out — it’s VERY likely you’re doing one of more of the following:
- YOU ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE.
When you JUMP from one brand to another… and from one topic to another — EVEN ON “JUST” YOUR PERSONAL PAGE — you are losing POWER and PROFIT. Could this apply to you?
Look at your profiles, business and personal… and consider the following:
How many “FOUNDER of” or CEO of titles do you have in your bio summary? =)
Does this point MORE to you being a “brand hopper” (I.e. Maybe THIS business will work!) or a true expert?
