When my Dad quit his job, a former long-time friend
— out of genuine concern, I believe–
reminded him,
that his J-O-B
was guaranteed money.
And that going out on his own,
as a “handyman” (he wasn’t a contractor back then)
was, you know,
risky.
Not guaranteed.
Not a sure thing.
“Will you sell your boat?” the man asked.
Hell no.
Here’s the thing. My Dad is always willing to bet on himself. Over any and every other option available to him, he’d CHOOSE to bet 100% on himself.
Against an intruder.
Against a storm.
Against economic downturns.
Against ANY and EVERY option,
he’d bet on himself.
So, out he went into the world of self-bossing.
45 years old.
Since 2000, he and my Mom have waited out the economic recession that put many other home contractors out of business and built a multi-million dollar a year business. They’ve RE-branded exactly zero times.
In fact the logo they STILL use was “swiped” directly (copied) from the clip art offered in their Word Perfect program at the time. The name has never changed. The tagline has never changed. The colors have never changed.
No re-branding. EVER.
Future proof,
In an industry that many consider
and have found to be
insecure and tumultuous,
and highly susceptible to economic headwinds,
in a resort area full of NON-resident homeowners.
HOW DID THEY DO IT?
Did they just get LUCKY with their first brand?
Nope. They built this business on the CORE of who my Dad is as a builder…. even before he was — legally — a builder.
They built the brand on building structures that last, on walking homeowners through the options, on NEVER cutting corners, on being able to see a project through from the foundation to the roof.
Their BRAND was them.
Responsible.
Dependable.
Likable.
Trustworthy.
Solid.
Time-tested.
The “logo” is a simple island with palm trees? Why? My Dad liked it then, and he still likes it now.
A brand BUILT on YOU…
built on the CORE of you,
who you ARE at your core,
who you ARE no matter who is around,
no matter WHAT situation you’re in…
may EVOLVE and grow and expand,
but it will never need to be REBRANDED
every time you have a new idea.
And SOLID brands
— built on the CORE of a strong leader —
stand the test of time.
They are FUTURE proof,
RECESSION proof.
