So, forgive my southern roots..
but when I was little I learned to fight,
and also how to shoot.
When I got my license, my car keys came with a set of keychain mace. You know… so I was armed and ready to defend myself.
My parents were SERIOUS about protecting me, the magic of me, the me that was so precious to them. And WE should be equally diligent about protecting our own “Magic.” Here’s what I mean:
You know when you’re the most “magical,” right? For me, it’s in the mornings. And when I’m outside writing. And when I’m engaging with you guys, my WOW sisters.
Because I know that these times are when i’m AT MY BEST, I MUST put a little bubble around those times.
A bubble that defends against easy distraction.
A bubble that REPELS negativity and pessimism.
A bubble that makes interruption nearly impossible.
A bubble that protects the “magic.”
Or, entrepreneurial mace. =)
To do this, you must first identify the times in your day and / or week that are OFF LIMITS… your magic times.
Then, you must do what it takes to protect it.
Cut off notifications.
Excuse yourself from conversations.
Shut the door.
Cut off the phone.
In public? Put on some headphones… the big ones, that people can see from far off.
Take your OWN negative thoughts CAPTIVE… put them aside, to be dealt with during “non-magical” times.
But mainly, you’ve got to be willing to allow other people to think you RUDE for not spending YOUR magic moments on THEIR whatever. You’ve got to let go of what they may think of you… in order to DO YOUR BEST WORK.
In Ancient Israel, the wall to the city was in disrepair. It offered no boundary, no protection and was also a source of humiliation for the Jews. Nehemiah set out to repair the wall, and was doing an amazing job at it. Soon, surrounding kings took notice of his work…and they sort of LIKED the Jews exposed and vulnerable and unable to defend themselves. So, they sought the EASIEST path towards keeping that wall in shambles: distraction.
And so the kings said, “Come down off the wall and talk with us.”
Nehemiah, who was “just a man” and certainly not a king, refused to let them into his bubble. His response?
“I am doing a great work and cannot come down.”
Who turns down a chit chat with a neighboring king? A man who is in his magic bubble… a man (or a woman) doing her best work. That’s who.
So, grab your entrepreneurial mace and let’s slay some goals today, shall we?
