It has been said that our “official” hand gesture is the one-fingered salute. And it sort of makes sense, right?
Many of us left the security of well-paying jobs, for JUST the opportunity to make our own rules… to work where we want, when we want and with whom we want. We left the known for the unknown, betting FULLY on ourselves, risking everything… LARGELY because we wanted to be our own BOSS.
It’s not JUST that we’re unemployable.
We intend on self-governing.
Doing what we want, living how we want, saying what we want… doing “it” our way.
By “it,” I mean, everything.
The marketing,
the packaging,
the pricing,
the delivery…
By “it,” I mean how we show up, in ALL the ways.
So, what does NOT surprise me is the fact that businesses located in states that intend on imposing more and more rules on these rebels are losing those businesses. It turns out that when you pick a fight with Elon Musk or Grant Cardone or EVEN the leaders at Samsung…. and they will NOT simply submit. They’ll either fight back aggressively… or pick up their chips (jobs, payroll taxes, land acquisition, etc.) and go elsewhere, where the view is better, more open, more free. I get it.
What DOES surprise me is how many entrepreneurs — born rebels and individualists — get stuck in the stepfordpreneur march. Right foot, left foot, right foot… turn. Salute this way. Dance this way. use this angle, this template, and be sure you stick to the script…
The script the guru gave you and promised was EXACTLY what they followed, the script that “guarantees” your success, the script that worked for him or her.
And you know what?
I get that too.
Because we’re not JUST defiant. We’re also success-minded and goal-oriented. Many of us, damn good students… too. We know that success leaves a trail… and so not even our rebel egos will keep us from following that trail. We ACTIVELY seek mentors and hacks and shortcuts.
And we’re willing to deny ourselves on the short-term to create the life and business and outcomes we want, long-term.
BUT LET ME TELL YOU WHY THE STEPFORD-PRENEUR MARCH NEVER WORKS.
Because true entrepreneurs will eventually go back to their core, to betting on themselves, to TRUSTING themselves. True entrepreneurs will only follow the protocol for a WHILE before they get bored stiff with it…and more than a little disgusted with themselves, following and following and following when they are NOTHING if not born leaders.
And those who ARE able to follow-the-leader for the long haul… well, they simply don’t have the staying power, tenacity or grit to last on the battlefield of business. If their income is provided elsewhere (a benevolent spouse, ex-spouse, parent?) they may just keep up appearances and hang around looking like a trep. But otherwise, they’ll exit stage left into the world of employee again. No harm, no foul.
Either way, the stepfordpreneur march always works
for exactly no one.
What DOES work,
is our defiant nature.
Defying the norm.
Why? Because the NORM is appalling. The NORM in business is debt and failure. The NORM in business is feast or famine. The NORM in business is too much busy and too few bucks.
Defying the rules of your industry.
Why? Because the rules of ANY industry are made to support the “norm” (see above) and also… to elevate those who MAKE the rules, to give them an unfair advantage. Never forget that you are not them. And also, far too many rules go unchallenged for far too long.
Defying the expectations of… everyone.
Why? Because some surprise is magnetic. Because there IS some value in attention. And because you were made to shatter expectations.
Defying any and EVERY attempt to control you, your message or your work.
Why? Because those who attempt to “hem you in” do NOT have your best, most empowered, most fulfilled self in mind.
Defying all the trends the others are following so hard.
Why? Because simply by not joining in their pathetic attempts to “catch a wave,” you’ll stand out. And ALL of marketing is about standing out… garnering not just the attention but the RESPECT of those you mean to serve.
Defying imposed restriction or containment in ANY area.
Why? Because false containers will never do. Because you were meant to be heard, seen and watched. Because glass ceilings are made in such ways. Because your very identity demands freedom to roam, and because you KNOW you’ll never stay put.
Defying every limit… about how FAR you can go, how LONG it will take you to get there, and what you MUST do in order to go all the way.
Why? Because you will never know these limits until you TEST them, and prove them to be simple mirages.
