I agree. In my PERSONAL opinion… that list of media “as seen in” logos SHOULDN’T matter as much as it does. But it DOES matter.

I was once asked by a TV station to help them “sell air time,” i.e. commercials. I gave them the following statistics:
- 65% of emails sent today are SPAM, reducing the previous profitability of email marketing;
- Both Oprah & Obama — both with social media “klout” and lists and teams to run such efforts both rely on REAL media when they have something to pitch (like Oprah’s last appearance on Letterman) or a message to deliver.
- In April 2013, Manta, ironically a social network for small business reported that 61% of small businesses saw NO return on their investments of time and money in social media.
I didn’t share with them the following statistics, which makes being PART of the story — vs a commercial or interruption to the story — so incredibly important:
- As a commercial you are an unwelcome distraction. As a media guest, you are a welcome expert.
- STATS: 92% of people who own DVRs fast forward through commercials.
- On average, people pay attention to the content in a tv show and the content in a print publication SIX times more than it’s advertising. (Ogilvy & Mather)
