Short answer: It cannot.
Most entrepreneurs focus so much on EXPOSURE,
but pay FAR TOO little attention to being RECOGNIZABLE.
This isn’t about being shocking or different,
but being RECOGNIZABLE,
in the same way your kids or friends could recognize your voice in a crowded store, even if they can’t SEE you.
MANY times, I’ll have people message me and say,
“Did so and so join Women Who WoW?”
WHY???
Because they see the tell-tale signs of MY recognizable voice impacting their work.
About a month ago, I was in a strange city.
One of our members was running late to a little meet up I was hosting, but her friend got to the bar early.
She came up to me and said, “Are you Michelle?”
Yup. How’d you know?
Her friend told her to look for the blonde in cowboy boots.
Recognizable.
But this isn’t about how you LOOK or what you WEAR.
My writing,
my phraseology,
my voice,
my demeanor,
my pace,
the words I use,
my low key events,
my use of CAPITAL LETTERS,
all of it..
is recognizable as mine.
If you are not RECOGNIZABLE,
it does not matter how famous you are,
you will NEVER generate enough DEMAND
for YOUR work (preferred over any other)
to sustain a healthy business.
SO, HOW DO YOU BUILD A RECOGNIZABLE BRAND?
First, you stop practicing your “non-regional diction” brand-wise. =) (That’s a little joke from a stupid silly movie. If you guess the movie — VIA A PRIVATE MESSAGE you get $100 in Michelle Money to spend any way you want!)
What does this “non-regional diction” LOOK LIKE in a brand?
❌ Well it looks like you took your message,
your personality,
your dress,
your copy,
your offers,
and you started EDITING…
❌ You rounded any potentially sharp edges,
you know… so you don’t “offend.”
❌ You softened it “just a bit,” and then “just a bit more” so that your WHATEVER is less “visible.” Maybe it’s your FAITH you want to fade into the background, or your HUSTLE… maybe it’s your view on a certain industry that you’re hoping doesn’t come across so loud, or whatever.
❌ You priced according to industry norms, you packaged according to industry norms, you made your lists, and presented your offers according to industry norms…
And bit by bit,
in this quest to look “legit” or “professional” or “successful,”
YOU are what’s fading into the background,
leaving a business that is so incredibly BLAND
no amount of salt could make it palatable,
LET ALONE DESIRABLE.
THE KEY IS TO IDENTIFY THE HEART OF YOUR BRAND AND YOUR WORK… AND INFUSE EVERY FIBER OF YOUR BRAND WITH WHAT MAKES YOU, YOU.
I know this is overwhelming…
