This is what I’m hearing, whether it’s Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest or anything else…. the complaint I’m hearing is simple:
“I FEEL LIKE I’M TALKING TO AN EMPTY ROOM,” This coming from people who are SHOWING UP consistently, but feeling un-heard, un-seen, un-acknowledged. (And going un-paid.)
There IS a fix, and it’s not what you think.
So, here’s what I’m NOT here to discuss: How to “beat” Facebook’s changing algorithm. Or Google’s or Instagram’s or YouTube’s. This shiz changes all the time. What remains constant is that they LIKE you — and throw attention your way — when YOUR content keeps people on THEIR platform longer. Period. Beyond that, I think they want to keep us guessing so that we’re required to PAY them to get eyeballs. Look, it’s their land, their rules. It is what it is.
So, while I COULD flit my hair and tell silly stories for 20 minutes at the front end of each Facebook video (to “hack” the system and get more LIVE eyeballs) I won’t. I don’t.
And I don’t have to. Here’s why:
I have BUILT a certain DEMAND for my voice in this industry. I’ve been a dark horse, a steady presence. I have people who CHECK their email, log into Facebook groups, get notifications of my posts, set aside time each week to “binge” on my posts and otherwise SEEK OUT my content…
RATHER THAN…
“stumble upon it via the grace of the internet gods.”
The whole internet gods thing has never been reliable for me. Perhaps I never offered the “right” sacrifice, lol… but either way I learned to never bet on it.
Instead, I bet on HUMAN principles of engagement, relationship, and psychology. Principles are true no matter where they are applied nor by whom, so they are trustworthy.
If you are LACKING attention, consider skipping all of the “internet marketing blueprints” and — instead — taking massive action to build AUTHORITY in your market. Without AUTHORITY,
Doctors lack compliance with their advice;
Coaches end up being “price shopped” and feeling like “no one pays for coaching;”
Therapists lose heart as they feel the market doesn’t REALLY grasp the value they’re bringing to market;
Women entrepreneurs begin to compete with each other, jealous and resentful of a sister’s success;
Veterinarians suffer from suspicion in the minds and hearts of their clients as their recommendations are questioned, challenged;
Experts keep teaching and sharing advice… trying desperately to earn the the right to CHARGE for their expertise but having their “brain picked” instead;
Real estate agents are viewed as interchangeable in the minds of their market; one being “just as good” as the next;
You get the idea.
If you haven’t CULTIVATED a certain demand for your voice, a PREFERENCE for your “take” on whatever it is that you do… you’ll constantly be at the mercy of the internet gods, this algorithm change or the next one.
To cultivate this demand and preference, you MUST WORK to build AUTHENTIC authority within your niche.
Rather than “reinvent the wheel,” I have created a “further reading” section below. I have been writing about this topic of building authority since AT LEAST 2012 I am just now remembering a full program I sold called something like, “Authority and Authenticity” or something like that. I’ll have to dig it out.
In addition to what’s below: consider doing the following:
PREACH as much or MORE than you teach. YES, get on that stage and get passionate. Be righteously angry at all of the lies your market is believing. Demonstrate your DESIRE for your market to have what they deserve. TAKE THE STAGE and own it.
Teachers (I’m married to one.) don’t get paid a LOT. But the biggest house in Chesapeake, VA belongs to a preacher. (#truth #BallahackRoad #LookfortheLions.) Teaching gives people facts they can get elsewhere. PREACHING inspires people and brings them back for more… FROM YOU.
Those within my market QUITE ENJOY Pippin Church.
STAND ON YOUR EXPERIENCE, EXPERTISE and — if you have it — LONGEVITY. I’ll never forget turning 35. I FULLY felt “legit.” When I turned 40, I was PUMPED. I felt like I could FINALLY be “old enough” to be full taken seriously.
Today, I am a grizzled veteran in this industry. Many names have shot to stardom, and then disappeared, some re-emerging with a new brand, a new schtick, a new bag of tricks. A precious few have stayed the entire time with no costume changes. I’m proud to stand among them. We have navigated MANY economic changes, several political changes and we are proven entities.

Authority is a DELIBERATE creation. You don’t “hope for it.” You build it, brick by brick and day by day. And it is a WORTHY effort. It ushers in the attention you need and the cash you want.
