I remember hearing talk of “it’d be great on your college applications,” but — honestly — paid no attention to it. I mean, if it were EASY (meaning I could sign up but I didn’t have to SHOW up) I’d probably do it.
But even THEN,
I couldn’t be bothered really.
And also,
I HATED pretense.
So if a college didn’t want me for who I was,
a well-rounded and brilliant student who was woefully under-achieving…
and some colleges actually DIDNT want me, lol…
Screw THEM.
When I took feminine studies in college,
my professor gave me a C.
One of only TWO C’s I got in college, despite NEVER attending class (and being excused due to my full time work schedule), I might add.
I knew the answers she wanted.
But, I couldn’t be bothered.
I refused to dull MY shine to adopt some victim status due to my female-ness.
No thanks.
I challenged her with reason absent emotion, and
let’s just say,
she was not appreciative.
I was 17.
By 21, I was the youngest person to ever hold the position I held in my city. I was young and single and I dressed like a young and single 21-year old. My bosses had a “discussion” with me about being professional and “being taken SERIOUSLY” in the courtroom.
ExSQUEEZE me?
I refused to drop my Ally McBeal outfits.
By 27, I had been named an expert witness in 19 states.
Prove myself? To who?
I’m ALWAYS taken seriously…
not because of what I wear, but because of who I am.
So, at 41…
when I hear grown up entrepreneurs being offered “opportunities” to “prove themselves” or “build their resume” or “gain credibility,”
I want to LITERALLY gag myself with a spoon.
WHAT WOULD POSSIBILY
MAKE YOU THINK
THAT THIS PERSON
WOULD WANT — OR NEED —
TO PROVE THEMSELVES TO YOU????
What would make you think that this brilliant 55 year old is still “building her resume?” ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
Please.
This **INSERT EXPLETIVE** drives me nuts.
Because this “proving yourself” mentality,
this credibility-seeking non-sense
is a CANCER for women entrepreneurs.
It eats away at our WHOLENESS.
It eats away at our POWER.
It INFECTS our thinking….
Because it challenges the FUNDAMENTAL truths that:
We are PROVEN by our results.
Just as a tree is proven by its fruit. An apple tree doesn’t seek a certification that it is an apple tree. it simply grows apples. I HAPPEN to be a certified coach. (I know.. I know.. .hold your applause.)
But I am PROVEN by my results… and — more importantly — by the results of my clients and members. WE dream and we DO.

Who would DARE ask you to PROVE YOURSELF to them? What POMPOSITY is that?
You want people to RECOGNIZE you as the LEADER you are? As a BADASS? As the ONE your tribe should FOLLOW?
Then, show up THAT leader.
Be THAT person.
Stand tall,
declare your position and then…
produce fruit.
When people ask you for your credentials, simply tell them to LOOK AROUND the empire you have created. Because if you start stumbling all over yourself trying to EARN their ACKNOWLEDGMENT of who you ALREADY KNOW YOU ARE?
Well, in 1999 I was named cutest person in the world,
and in 2001 I earned — um — another certification from the acclaimed Pay-And-You-Get-Your-Paper University for Speakers. Oh — and also — well… I paid $750 to be on the cover of some pretend digital magazine. Yuck.
Do ANY version of this and you just proved yourself part of the mediocre majority. Submissive and subservient to the “ruling class.”
In the expert arena,
there are a LOT of people trying to prove themselves.
The ones making money,
are the ones who REFUSE to dust off their resume for each prospective client or speaking gig.
