For a long time, I had a client based business…
meaning I had private clients that I met with every week, week in, week out, ad nauseum.
I strategized and coached AND wrote for them. And, for a long time, I loved them…. enjoyed them… and LOVED seeing them succeed. I found their work inspiring, I found their grit inspiring… I found their success inspiring. And I GENUINELY loved (and still love) them as people.
BUT ONE DAY,
I looked up
and realized that THEIR businesses were moving forward… and MINE was just — you know — hanging tough.
THEIR work was being done,
but MY work,
the work to GROW (not maintain) my business
was getting done — but SPORADICALLY.
ENTER MICHELLE’S ACCESS PLAN. =)
This is when I REALLY dug into my “ACCESS plan…” the plan that GOVERNED access to me. HOW MUCH access would my clients get? and WHEN? HOW MUCH writing would I do… and WHEN? HOW MUCH WAS TOO MUCH? What would constitute an EMERGENCY?
I’ve never publicly discussed this,
and even to my (then) clients,
My ACCESS Plan was NEVER announced.
HINT: Changing rules mid-stream tends to piss people off.
BUT the “Access Plan” was IMMEDIATELY implemented. =)
Texts — which were / are not my preferred method of communicating regarding business stuff — were not “rewarded” with IMMEDIATE response.
EMAILS were NO LONGER responded to between the hours of 4 PM EST and 10 AM EST. EVER. (In the beginning, rather than announce a new “rule,” which would have created resistance, or just leave them wondering where I went, I’d send a quick response to emails that said, “I’ll respond to this by noon” or “by 1PM” or whatever.
I started stacking my calls so that I could HONESTLY have a reason for setting an end time to my coaching calls, which had become a bit more “open ended.” Not that I needed a reason, but I was shifting and felt LESS RESISTANCE (within MYSELF) when I had a “next client” or “next appointment” coming up.
I began dedicating the FIRST few hours of EVERY day to MY OWN messaging, to my OWN showing up, to my OWN writing, to my OWN branding, to my OWN work. It was scheduled — along with my clients and client work — in my calendar.
And more…
so much more.
In short, with this simple, but DETAILED “access plan,”
I was taking back my life.
I was pulling in my boundaries again,
so I could ENJOY my clients again.
And so I could enjoy my WORK again,
BUT MAINLY,
so I could get back into FLOW with my OWN purpose work… so I could FINALLY realize my OWN dreams and goals.
Truth be told, I thought I’d ALWAYS have clients.
I made 5 figures a month,
every month with just 5 clients.
And I had a waiting list of potential clients waiting for me to have room to work with them.
But once my Access Plan went into effect,
a funny thing happened.
The MORE my energy went into my BIGGER GOALS,
the MORE money came in from my work.
The MORE I “did me,”
the stronger my brand became,
the more compelling my offers,
the more poignant my writing.
1 by 1, clients rotated off of my calendar,
and I didn’t replace them.
And the less clients I had,
the more money I made.
A $2500 client rotated off,
and that next month’s income would go up by $3500.
It was ASTOUNDING to watch, really.
But it shouldn’t have been.
Because when you POUR your energy into YOUR work,
the work you are on this earth to do,
the work that is UNIQUELY yours,
the work that you are UNIQUELY QUALIFIED to do,
the NATURAL OUTCOME
is money and success.
