Here is how you can capture the heart of YOUR market, starting today.
LOOK AT WHAT ALL OF YOUR COMPETITORS ARE DOING, AND DO THE OPPOSITE.
When I look at what my “competitors are doing, I am slightly embarrassed to be an “internet marketer.” They’re:
🤔 pretending to publish books that OTHERS are also pretending to publish… same titles, same covers (after they change out the “author” name, of course) same pitch… used ALL OVER social media, as if “original.”
🤔 PUSHING HARD to sell the stuff of someone who is “more known” than them… as if battling it out for some secret award.
🤔 Doing the same, snooze-worthy webinar + 3 – part “training series” as part of their launch… as if we’ve not grown tired and IMMUNE to such things.
🤔 Hanging around and hanging on the EVERY word of “the right people” du jour.
🤔 Recording videos in front of the same white background and obligatory “I’m SO feminine” vase of flowers and MAYBE a unicorn picture, which can also be switched out for a picture of the Eiffel Tower, without pubic penalty. Fuzzy pink chair, optional. lol…
It’s pitiful really, and — shockingly — all done in PUBLIC and in PLAIN VIEW of anyone and everyone they’re trying to influence. We live in an age of outrageous — but seemingly always ignored — irony.
There is a LOT of lip service given to BEING AUTHENTIC, but CONFORMITY is what is DEMANDED of most people who DARE to be in the public eye.
We saw women being kicked out of women’s marches because their view on ONE issue differed from the “approved view” (by consensus?) on that issue. We see black Americans being scolded PUBLICLY for daring to think — and speak — differently than what has been “approved thinking.” (I saw this same racist scenario being played out in the movie Django Unchained.) We see Christians kicked out of churches for DARING to show Christ’s love to “the wrong people.” (Perhaps they forgot the whole “For God so loved the WORLD” piece of our cornerstone verse?) We see our Facebook friends labeling and name-calling anyone who doesn’t agree with them on _________________.
Authenticity is still given top billing from our lips, #ofcourse
but the masses FULLY intend on enforcing group think.
My advice? RESIST.
Be ruthlessly and rebelliously authentic, EVEN THOUGH conformity is “easier” for the masses to digest. (and control, but that’s a lesson for another day.)
I am a walking contradiction. I know this. For example… I am a feminist and a Christian and a libertarian. I am an Alpha female and a nurturing mother. I am sensitive and also have a VERY thick skin. I am heart-centered, but I have grit and tenacity. I am a proud capitalist and also a bleeding heart. I am a peace maker, but will never shy away from those rare moments when going toe-to-toe with someone is necessary. I care about PEOPLE over things. I have a great deal of respect and AWE for our military, but have to constantly “check” — especially because I know my kids are watching — my view of authority.
I do not worry about not being able to be easily “classified,” “categorized,” or figured out. I do not concern myself with trying to FIT IN to one definition or another.
In a world FULL of conformity,
even SMALL deviations from the norm are noticed.
So, feel free to have a DIFFERENT background in your videos, lol… the Raw, un-finished wood in my own videos is different, but ALSO authentic, fitting in with my rustic, southern, gritty vibe. Feel FREE to SPEAK TRUTHS about your industry, even when it goes against approved rhetoric. Feel FREE to challenge what is ASSUMED to be GOSPEL truth about the niche you’re in.
TRUE Authenticity is SO rare,
INCREASINGLY so,
that even LITTLE differences will grab your market’s attention.
To capture their hearts,
care.
Really…
just care.
care BEYOND the CASH.
Ask how your people are doing.
Ask how your people are FEELING.
Ask about their RESULTS.
Show up when they have a question,
treat YOUR people like REAL people.
Get their attention by being yourself,
and capture their heart by SEEING them and CARING for them. Trust me, it’s a LOST art.
