This week, I was being interviewed and just prior to going live, the show host asked me what I “was,” what my title was… Looking back on it now, I’m sure she was thinking I’d come up with something like, “Profit Princess” or “Founder” or even — JEEZ — at least “CEO.” But, my answer was more revealing than I even realized.
I said, “I’m just a girl who fell in love with all things business.”
I AM “just a girl,” if I am anything.
Entirely, undeniably average in every single, possible way.
I’ll never forget when my daughter Shelbey came home from school to announce that she’d written her Dad and I a song. The title of her Dad’s song was, “GREATEST MAN IN THE WORLD.”
The title of MY song,
I kid you not,
“AVERAGE WOMAN.”
What can I Say? The kid gets me.
“Average woman” just about sums me up.
The thing is, that’s okay.
I have had the opportunity to meet — and even share the stage with — some HOUSEHOLD NAMES in the entrepreneurial world. I’ve conversed with “giants” and paid a couple of them to mentor me. And you know what?
They’re ALL average.
Like me.
And maybe like you,
if you’re willing to go there.
But HERE is the thing.
These AVERAGE, ORDINARY people
do extraordinary things…
and create extraordinary success…
Because — in their average-ness — they are willing to do what others aren’t.
Willing to risk criticism and failure.
Willing to show up.
Willing to be exposed.
Willing to do the hard work, without guarantee.
Willing to get egg on their face. (Sometimes, on repeat.)
Willing to BET ON THEMSELVES.
So, yeah…
I’m “just” a girl.
A girl who fell in love with a man…. and then some kids… and then a business.
A girl who — despite her AVERAGE-ness–
is willing to create an extraordinary business (and life)…
built,
brick by brick,
with her own two hands,
and on her own terms.
Sometimes I wish I had notions of grandeur, lol… It may make business a bit easier. But being AVERAGE makes it more fun, more relatable, more replicable.
Truly, if this average woman CAN,
Anyone can.
