Look I know what I sell. I know that I teach and have created a lot of success using internet marketing. I work from home on my own terms, travel VERY rarely (a good thing in my book) and my income ceiling literally doesn’t exist. I admit, it’s a cool gig I’ve carved out for myself.
But, I started out 20+ years ago in a virtual industry that had NOT truly been named. Back then, working from home was viewed with “suspicion.” I even bought a CASSETTE TAPE that had call center sounds on it to “pretend” I was somewhere else when I made phone calls. (True story.) You heard RUMORS of people working from home, licking envelopes or whatever but you didn’t actually KNOW someone who did such a thing. But I was desperate.
I either had to figure out a way to make money from home FAST, like within FOUR WEEKS of birthing my daughter, or… put the girls with a sitter and go back to a standard “real job.”
I didn’t look for a coach or a mastermind, because I’d never heard of such things. And with the $50 I had to invest in my business at the time, I couldn’t have afforded them anyway.
I figured it out by looking at REAL businesses all around me. I knew I needed to have something to sell. Fine: I’d sell “secretarial services.” (No, I’m not joking. I had a computer, fax machine and I could type.) I’d call myself an “at home secretary.” (The term virtual assistant hadn’t yet been invented.) I’d market via a ONE PAGE letter sent via snail mail (hardly anyone I knew REALLY used email yet.) and I’d let them know (IN THESE WORDS) that “if they had anything that could be done by phone, email, fax or computer… that I could do it.”
That little letter,
mailed to 100 people
($32 in stamps.)
made $63K.
I was on my way.
Think about that story for a second.
No list.
(Other than the 100 names I composed by hand of people who might need secretarial services, resumes, database crap.)
No website.
No networking group.
No advertising.
No social media.
No “Influencers.”
No live streams.
No blog.
No funnels.
No coach and no mastermind.
$32 spent on stamps
+ a targeted list
+ a direct offer
+ follow up via phone
=
$63K of income I made while raising my kids that first year in business.
So you can imagine my surprise when i started reading business books that talked about how much money I had to invest to be successful and how long I had to wait to turn a profit. You can imagine my horror when one “business expert” suggested that if I could turn $1 into $2 by a perfectly placed and worded classified ad, I’d be successful. WHAT? I thought??? I turned $50 into $63,000.
The more I read about business from the “experts” the more I realized that either I was wrong, or they were wrong. And I was still working MY way FROM HOME, around the schedule of toddlers and infants… and the money in my bank account didn’t come from a monopoly. (Side note; I don’t love monopoly. Chris loves it. It moves too slow for me.)
No, I was doing something RIGHT.
And either the RULES they were spewing were wrong,
or they didn’t apply to me.
The further I went in business, the more I realized that the rules were WRONG. As were most experts. In fact, MOST of the BUSY work touted by MOST experts — AND that business school you’re considering right now— are TOTAL B.S. They make you feel accomplished, organized, “ready” to go, but leave you WITHOUT the marketing and sales GRIT and MUSCLE necessary to create success.
And unlike what the current editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur magazine said in a recent issue, being an entrepreneur is NOT a state of mind. Sorry sir. Being an entrepreneur is the VERY REAL decision to bet on yourself… to leave that steady paycheck behind and make a go of that idea… with little more than a hope and a prayer and the SHEER GRIT of a woman on a mission. Oh, and $32 to spend on stamps.
So, if I had begun this business in the age of EVERY INDUSTRY HAS 100 EXPERTS, I would have done the “wise” thing and invested to learn from them. Unfortunately, without my own success under my belt, I fear I would have BELIEVED what they taught.
And it would have cost me…
as it has cost so many others…
time,
effort,
money
but mainly HEART
and HUSTLE.
I fear I may have given up in debt and discouragement,
disillusioned and devastated
wondering why ALL OF THOSE TESTIMONIALS
were of wild success,
and
I
got
nowhere.
