Entrepreneur Magazine is one of my favorites… always has been. But a couple of years ago, they left me scratching my head… after canceling Dan Kennedy’s online column with them. I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t even notice they had asked him back. His recent article with them is excellent — and all about time management.
Kudos to Entrepreneur for bringing back someone truly in touch with the world of trep-dom. Dan’s approach is a bit unconventional, a bit rough around the edges — but PURE truth. He’s a definite asset to their already stellar content.
Not EVERYONE, though, is interested in bringing you “the real deal.” Many well-meaning business owners — even those who TRULY believe they have integrity in their work — fail to see glaring gaps in what they offer.
Take — for instance — this very sweet woman, who I would never name. I had a conversation with her about a week ago, and realized that she was not yet “actually” in business. Nope. She’s a full time employee with an unprofitable gig on the side, which she HOPES will one day liberate her from her “day job.” This is all fine and good. MANY amazing businesses start here. However, here’s what I found on her facebook page recently:
“Tell me what you’re interested in, and passionate about and I’ll show you how to build a business that’s profitable. Visit <<my WEBSITE>> to schedule an appointment….
Do you see the irony?
I wonder how she rationalizes this marketing claim as true — because I know her to be a woman who values integrity. I wonder how she’ll deal with the issue of only being able to schedule appointments after the standard work day hours. More than that, I wonder how many want-to-be-profitable business owners will question her ability to help THEM do what SHE hasn’t yet done … before following her guidance.
I actually like this person. If she were an isolated example of the blind leading the blind, though, I’m confident the success statistics for business would be far better. I’m convinced that 4 out of 5 businesses fail because they are talking to each other… listening to each other’s “advice” and “wisdom” and rarely questioning it. So, remember the nursery rhyme:
Oh be careful little eyes what you see…
Oh be careful little ears what you hear…
This month — for our WOWmonthly members — I’m scheduling interviews with two amazing and profitable business owners. NEITHER are “typical” gurus. BOTH have implement-me-now strategies that will inch us closer to our own definition of “wild success.” Can’t wait!
