“Success is cooked up in a messy kitchen,” is a quote I have long embraced… Along with the realization that one day I will die with a messy desk, a to do list yet un-done and a couple of projects mid-way complete.
I’ve made peace with it, and this post is going to implore you to do the same… because mess and mayhem DO indeed go hand in hand with money for the entrepreneur.
We MUST have a certain tolerance for “mess” in order to do what we need to do, move the way we need to move, pivot when we need to pivot, and — let’s face it — follow our own flow the way our soul desires. The whole idea of a having a clean, step by step list of chronologically ordered tasks that lead to a happy ending of every day is APPEALING, but much more aligned with being an employee.
You know, you get paid to do X,Y & Z. So, you do X,Y & Z and collect that paycheck, baby.
But as an entrepreneur, our world moves fast. Things shift quickly, and when we are NOT deliberately LEAN and AGILE… well, in the words of Whoopi, “you in trouble, girl.”
This does NOT mean you need to tolerate CHAOS. That’s different. CHAOS is draining, demanding and distracting. You simply MUST deal with chaos in order to get “back to work.”
But the MESS of money-making….
being in the middle of 2 or more books an any one time;
being surrounded by information you’re reading, considering, studying — often piled digitally and physically;
having multiple ideas in your head at all times;
the thrill of UNLIMITED ways of making money and having a hard time choosing the next one;
the open calendar that isn’t “over-scheduled” but is also jam packed with potential…
the mess of BELIEVING 100% in what you’re doing being tangled up with some self-doubt…
the mental conversations going on with self, clients, colleagues, etc.
THIS mess will ALWAYS accompany wild (financial) success. You might be able to create “some” success in a very orderly, sequential fashion. Left foot, check. Right foot, check. Left foot, check. I’m sure you could even make a LIVING that way, but WILD success? On your own terms? A level of success that does JUSTICE to your true potential?
Well, that requires us to be flexible with time and tolerant of mess and the ability to be comfortable with mayhem. We can HIRE people to clean up behind us as we go from one project, one idea, one launch to another. BUT that is NOT the best use of OUR time. WE have to be FREE to FLIT.
So, how TOLERANT are you of mess?
How COMFORTABLE are you with mayhem?
Can you rise above it to do your purpose work?
Or do you go off-course and try to “manage” the mess?
Because the key to YOUR (financial) success is NOT in CLEARING the mess. (That’s someone else’s job. For the TRUE leader and messenger, guys…. this tidying up is ALWAYS off course.)
The key to YOUR success is the ability to not be distracted by it, to ACCEPT mess and mayhem as part of the “by-product” of empire-building.
So, where are YOU tidying up???
When you SHOULD be making a mess?
I will tell you that one of my GREATEST disciplines…
and i DO call it a discipline
is ignoring EVERYTHING except what I KNOW I am born to do.
Yep, this gets messy.
And it DOES get cleaned up.
BUT not by me.
