Two inconvenient facts you must know and accept in order to make THIS article the most profitable thing you’ve read all year:
- The more “commoditized” you are, the less money and freedom you will have. If you are a commodity, your market can find some thing comparable ANYWHERE and then haggle over price; and
- Your market — and mine — WANT to commoditize you, and here’s why:
EASE & PRICE
If you are a commodity, it’s easier for the consumer. If you’re a commodity, they can buy on their own terms, name their own price, and there is NO sense of urgency on their part. If you’re a commodity, buying — for them — is simple. THIS is why consumers WANT — even subconsciously — to commoditize their “vendors.”
But, commodization is the KISS OF DEATH for entrepreneurs, for all of those same reasons. You MUST fight it to the death, doing all you can to DELIBERATELY & SYSTEMATICALLY create the following:
- authority;
- relationship;
- voice recognition and voice preference.
AUTHORITY
Authority isn’t a noun, but a process. It is a deliberate process of positioning yourself as an expert and leader in your industry for the PURPOSE of commanding influence in that industry.
Deliberate.
Strategic.
Process.
Many things help to create such authority. The first is naming your tribe and getting to know them intimately. Message me for a list of things you SHOULD know about your market. Celebrity also helps. FIND A WAY to push yourself into the local or national conversation using the news and media. Writing or speaking AS AN EXPERT in your industry is critical. You’ll only create influence when your industry knows who you are, WHY you are so different, and HOW you can help them.
Write.
Speak.
Show up (not as a peer, but as an expert).
RELATIONSHIP
Again, be deliberate about this. Once you know ABOUT your market, you MUST take the time to KNOW THEM. You’ve got to talk with them, hear them, listen to them… ask them questions…. hear their frustrations.
NOT in a willy nilly way. =)

VOICE RECOGNITION & PREFERENCE
Not only should your tribe RECOGNIZE your voice… meaning they know your stories, your analogies, your tone, and your message whether it’s in writing or visual or audio form, they will ALSO recognize when someone tries to “be you.” =)
(And they’ll tell you about it…. lol…)
But, they should also PREFER your voice. Your market has a TON going on and they NEED the information or products or perspective or support that you GIVE, but it is IMPERATIVE that they PREFER to get it from you.
Because let’s face it… we ALL have people doing something VERY similar to what WE do. Louis Vuitton, Vera Bradley, and Mossimo ALL make handbags. EACH brand is PREFERRED by a certain market… and the same can be true for you.
