I may be a BIT late to the game, but I just watched Minimalism: A Documentary. While living in a 260-foot apartment, throwing out my DRAWERS FULL of makeup and all of that just isn’t for me…there’s a simplicity inherent in this minimalist movement that has ALWAYS appealed to me.
In the early days, I sought simplicity — I thought — because I wanted financial rest and financial “minimalism.”
Today, I realize that my buying a Mont Blanc pen for $800+ dollars and getting rid of my tumblers full of “other pens” is also a form of simplicity.
Getting rid of what I don’t LOVE…
to make room for the BEST,
to make room for what I REALLY WANT,
REPLACING DRAWERS FULL OF “okay” with a COUPLE PREMIUM OPTIONS.
Taking my foot off of first base,
so I can sprint to second.
Letting go what is RIGHT NOW,
to reach for the FUTURE.
This past weekend, inspired by The Minimalists, I packed an entire truck full of stuff. Good stuff. Some stuff with tags still on it. Some stuff I used to like. I even released my red cowboy boots that I USED to love.
I released it all because I don’t love ANY of it any longer.
I have no need or desire for ANYTHING anymore that doesn’t fit into my ideal… and of course, this includes, but goes WAY beyond “stuff.”
I want to challenge you to take a quick moment to look around our business with this same “purge” mindset.
What do you need to let go of in order to make room for what you want?
A software system that no longer (or perhaps NEVER) really “worked.”
A belief system that keeps you playing small.
A friend or friends that ANCHOR you in all the wrong ways.
A habit that keeps you numb, distracted or otherwise not at your BEST self. (For me, this was sugar.)
A client — or clients — that make you dread Mondays.
A task, or group of tasks that keep you ankle chained to a reality you no longer love.
Pay SPECIAL attention to the things you WANT to let go of, but feel you CAN’T.
Trust me… you CAN.
And you should.
FULL AUTONOMY releases you from being dependent on any ONE thing… any ONE software, any ONE employee, any ONE client, any ONE friend, any ONE habit, any ONE mentor.
