Growing up in a red carpet Baptist church, I sang this song as a kid…
“O be careful little ears what you hear

So, be careful little ears what you hear.”
In the interest of time, I won’t write out the ENTIRE song. The point is that we SHOULD be careful who we’re listening to. And that point has NEVER been more obvious than in the business world.
Last night, I decided to re-read an old (2012) book in the bathtub. It was on “creating money” and a quick read. There was an entire chapter on “Learn How To Make Money Online.” In it, the author gave us FIVE people to follow to LEARN & FOLLOW their system on making money online.
Only ONE of the five is still making money online.
One has a regular J-O-B.
Another “retired” in bankruptcy.
The other two are nowhere to be found.
The one still kicking is doing very well, but in an ENTIRELY different industry than 8 years ago.
The “examples” we’re supposed to follow…
didn’t even beat the 80% odds of small business failure.
And they were KNOWN…and BIG.
Big enough that I CERTAINLY couldn’t have afforded to work with them in any meaningful way back then.
But here are some thoughts to consider:
These people were LEADING the online industry when it was emerging. This means they were PART of MAKING UP the “rules” we’re being encouraged to follow now.
Swallow THAT one.
Because it is a bitter pill to swallow.
ALL the rules about any industry are made up.
PERHAPS by people who followed them and failed.
(Sustainability and longevity in business… matters and it matters A LOT.)
ALL the rules are made up.
It would be PROFITABLE for you to consider which of these rules you’ve just accepted as “must follow.”
It would be PROFITABLE for you to take my Mom’s question to me, “Who says?”
It would be PROFITABLE for you to “be careful little ears what you hear.”
There are a LOT of charlatans in this industry.
KNOW who you are listening to.
KNOW if they are making money,
or if — perhaps —
they are husband-funded,
but looking like rock stars.
In full disclosure, MY husband is a public school teacher. We married and combined nearly $100K in DEBT from student loans. When I started this business, I had $213 in SAVINGS.
Consider that.
$213 in SAVINGS, meaning… we had TUCKED that little bit away, over TIME.
Anyway, I just have one more story to tell. If you’re into reality TV you might like it.
So, I was planning an event in Atlanta. We had some amazing speakers lined up. Including Judge Judy. (Hey– I was a fan!) And I get this really exciting email from a Real Housewives star. She wanted to speak at my event. WHAT??? Before I go on, I should mention that she was married to an NFL star.
So, I got on the phone.
I asked EXCITEDLY what business she was in.
She EXCITEDLY shared that she owned a fashion boutique.
So, I explain a BIT about the purpose of the event. (To help female entrepreneurs make more money in their business.)
So far so good,
and then the REST of our conversation:
Me: Is your business profitable?
Her: What do you mean?
Me, perplexed, wondering how to explain “profitable” to a small business owner: I mean, does your money give you money, or does it cost you money each month?
Her: Oh, it’s still losing money every month.
I had to turn her down. I explained that I’d LOVE to have her speak later, once she became profitable. WHY???? Because I would NEVER have a speaker on MY stage
teaching how to make money,
when they were NOT making money.
I call it integrity.
And personal responsibility.
Whatever.
You get my point.
There’s a LOT of people giving a LOT of advice out there and it MATTERS who you’re listening to.

dare I say even EASY.

And then I started hearing those PayPal pings. May as well have been a choir of angels singing my favorite song. I couldn’t believe it.
21 minutes in,
and that little program / product
was SOLD OUT.
Of course, I’m no fool. I upped the price and sold it

over and over and over again…
every two months, to be specific.
For about 18 months.
No ads, no affiliates, no SEO, nothing fancy.
