No SET, FIRM expectations, that is.
No expectations that were really about making THEM look a certain way.
In other words, I woke up and was allowed to BE me,
EXPRESS me, GROW me…
Figure out WHO I’d be,
for THAT day.
OF COURSE there were moments when I caused them, ahem, concern.
The hours I’d spend alone, reading and journaling in my closet. (WAIT!! All kids didn’t DO that?)
The times I wanted to be “creative” and start to do something TOTALLY normal, like build a broom — from scratch — in the garage.
The boy they were quite convinced had gotten me “on drugs.”
But through it all,
even as I KNEW there were aspects of me that they didn’t quite UNDERSTAND,
I also KNEW — beyond a shadow of a doubt—that they ACCEPTED and APPROVED of me.
There was never a set path for me,
never a set career,
never a set of steps that I was expected to take.
College or not.
Pageants or not.
Cheerleading or not.
Theatre or not.
It was ALL up to me.
My grades.
My friends.
My life.
Not ONLY did they accept me,
they TRUSTED me…
to create a life,
day by day.
And my Mister picked up where they left off.
Every day, the man wakes up beside me and — I’m guessing — wonders (MOSTLY, lol… without judgement) what wild and crazy idea I’ll come up with for today.
=)
We’ve navigated quite a life so far like this… just following our hearts, GROWING, making mistakes, charting our own course.
How we grew our family,
how we birthed children,
medical decisions we made along the way,
homeschooling,
private schooling,
public schooling.
And of course, how we supported our family…
following my little ideas that sometimes went BIG.
The gift has been total acceptance
and zero expectation,
allowing me to follow my heart,
instead of some unwritten set of rules of what a good girl or woman or wife or mother should be.
I have taken this gift into the world of business… as I feel (a bit) like WE are the MOTHER of our business. WE brought this thing into the world and it’s up to us to nurture it into adulthood.
THE MOMENT I let go of all of the shoulds of my business — what my funnels SHOULD look like…. what my blog posts SHOULD be about… what my website SHOULD offer… what tools I SHOULD use… what sales pages SHOULD say — my business began to REALLY blossom.
It took off,
grew leaps and bounds,
AS SOON AS I released to
to live without the burden of a list of arbitrary expectations.
Who knew?
