On the way to the office this morning I passed a woman on her morning jog.
Now, this isn’t necessarily unusual. On most mornings I pass about 12 joggers on their morning run. Sometimes more.
This morning, only one.
Why? Because it’s dreary, cold and rainy here today. In my humble opinion, a perfect day to prepare for a mastermind event. A perfect day to write. An exceptional day to blog. Or plan. Or have your massage therapist over. Or get your nails done. Or slip into your most comfy pair of pajamas with a great book.
(Unrelated Side note: My most recent non-business related book suggestion? Elephant Girl by www.janedevin.com — compelling and eye opening. Finished reading with a big air punch celebrating with Jane, tears in my eyes for her decision to live the life she imagined — against all, and I do mean ALL odds.)
But not a great day to jog. A MISERABLE day to jog, actually. And so this jogger was alone in her commitment.
Now, in complete transparency, I’m like the other 11 joggers who opted out today. =) JUST like them in fact. I look outside. If it’s rainy, I’m out. If it’s really cold, I’m out. If it’s dreary, I’m out.
This morning, we saw this jogger and my husband says, “Now that’s commitment.” Commitment indeed.
Because let’s face it. Commitment is EASY. When it’s easy. When it’s convenient. Of course, when you act according to your goals and purpose ONLY when it’s easy or convenient, can we call that commitment at all?
Not really. I’m reminded of a Bible verse in one of my favorite books of the Bible, Ecclesiastes 11:4, and I’m paraphrasing:
“Farmers who wait for perfect weather will never plant.”
Never. Ever. And they’ll not only not plant, they’ll not reap. They’ll never harvest. THE SAME IS TRUE IN BUSINESS.
There are NO perfect seasons to begin, ramp up, hire, fire, or invest. There’s only today. There’s only THIS SEASON. Which makes it perfect. So, what are you committed to today?
Why not get some public accountability and put your own rainy day commitment below? If you dare… =)
