First, they are just bogus.
They are made up holidays,
but aren’t ALL holidays made up?
Sure, but THESE holidays OFTEN urge businesses owners to SELL AT A LOSS (to them), encouraging otherwise smart business owners to go into a bloody fight ring and compete toe to toe with others…
NOT ON MERIT or VALUE
but on price.
Yuck. MANY businesses winning the “sales game” on these holidays lose in the end… losing so much profit, going into the RED in order to get your sale. I can’t feel good about my discount when I know it’s putting a small business into a financial hole that MANY don’t recover from.
(Note: If you “win” a customer or client by being the cheapest, you will LOSE that same customer or client when someone else is willing to lose money on a “deal.”)
Also, these “holidays” clutter my feed with outrageous and insulting MEMES that belittle the MICRO — but MIGHTY — business.
Example: “When you buy local, you pay for a little girl’s ballet lessons.”
That may be true.. but also…
Small businesses,
even MICRO businesses
in your community
aren’t ONLY paying for ballet lessons.
If so, these are lucky hobbyists, not real business owners.
In my opinion, you SHOULD look locally when shopping for goods or services. You SHOULD look to support your family and friends. It IS “a thing” that strangers are more supportive of a woman’s business than her own friends and family, and it sucks. (It also hurts. MANY of my “friends” have zero idea OR interest in my business, and some are actually women entrepreneurs.) You’re buying ANYWAY, why not support this dream she’s birthing by the sweat of her own brow???
but also,
again in my humble opinion,
You should buy local and buy small ONLY if they are offering a superior product or service. PERIOD. (And they often are…. because small business owners are likely to see you at the Food Lion, the local movie theater or Christimas shopping this season. We CARE about our reputation, but MAINLY about our clients. So we WANT to do a phenomenal job.)
But to assert that you should “buy local” because it will help little Jenny keep going to ballet lessons UNDERMINES the TRUE power of small businesses.
🔥 Small businesses employ 64% of American workers. They are a MIGHTY force in America. (Atlas, please don’t shrug!)
🔥 Small businesses create inter-generational wealth for families, provide college tuition for kids, create necessary programs that serve the community and pony up money to build handicap ramps, replace roofs and appliances for local families, etc.
🔥 Small business owners ALSO support other small businesses. In addition to providing JOBS, we also keep money circulating in our communities.
I mean, sure…
some ballet lessons are ALSO paid for,
but that is SUCH a trite and small example of our REAL power in our local communities.
My rant’s not over yet.
These holidays also encourage otherwise smart business owners to PUBLICLY BEG for what amounts to “public applause” instead of actual sales. Honest to God, this gives me the shivers when i think about it, and NOT in a good way.
“PUT ME IN THE ALGORITHM…”
“GIVE ME A LIKE”
What??
Woman… Listen to yourself:
Put me in the ALGORITHM?!?!
Give this post a THUMBS UP?
I literally want to shake this non-sense off of my SOUL when I see it. It’s too silly. Too desperate. Too weird.
1) Zuckerberg is a very smart man. You will NOT beat their algorithm. And should you EVER get close, it will soon change. Bottom line; they show what they want.
2) Likes do NOT equal success. Neither do numbers of followers or friends or connections or views. I was once asked by a woman with over 1MILLION instagram followers for money to pay her rent. I thought she’s been hacked, because… What does she sell??? “HOw to make money on instagram.” (I responded and … she had NOT been hacked.)
3) Likes, thumbs up, hearts… they’re all bogus, made up, weird and NON-SENSICAL measurements of success. PROFIT is how we keep score here. PROFIT is how jobs are created, bills are paid, businesses are grown. Don’t get THIS twisted.
If you REALLY want to support a business, buy from them. Introduce them to others who should buy from them. Share direct offers with people who would benefit from saying yes. A “like” won’t EVEN pay for the damn ballet lesson. (see link in comments for more ways to really support a local, small business.)
I wish I was done.
But alas, my rant continues:
These holidays make business out to be some short term, one-day SPRINT, when in actuality… business is NOTHING if not a marathon.
And — just so you know — I love to go the distance.
If you are still reading my rant,
if you are NOT a hobbyist,
if you want your business to pay for MORE than ballet lessons
if you want to create LIFE CHANGING income for your family,
if you are thinking,
“Yeah…. all of this makes sense,”
it’s time to DEFY this silliness.
Spend 11 days with me,
starting December 6th,
to go into the PRACTICAL application of DEFIANCE.
We’ll cover:
➡️ WHY defiance…. (Hint: Compliance leads to you getting whatever the “norm” is, and most norms are APPALLING.)
➡️ HOW to defy without getting in “trouble” lol…
➡️ How to get out of any and every RESTRAINT or RESTRICTION in every area
➡️ How to defy your need — or their expectation — of “neatness” and bows and curtsies… and infuse your work with FIRE instead.
➡️ How to operate at an entirely new level of authenticity…. one so few EVER really reach.
➡️ How far you could ACTUALLY go if you removed these false and silly containers, but also… how to recognize them for the unnatural containers they are.
I can hardly wait. Also…
The pre-work for DEFY is nothing but 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥, woman. All about your IDENTITY, and how you being YOU will NOT ONLY DEFY their expectations… but allow you to SHATTER industry norms. (And how anything less will — of course and naturally — lead to, well… LESS… in all the ways.)
