I hear a lot of talk about imposter syndrome…. Where entrepreneurs (women, mainly… it appears this is a PRIMARILY a female syndrome.) start to doubt their accomplishments and feel — essentially — like they’re not REALLY who they are showing up as… in business.
The focus of “defeating” imposter syndrome is typically focused on the “imposter” herself, trying to cajole women into seeing themselves more accurately.. trying to build their own awareness of their TOTALLY LEGIT and IMPRESSIVE entrepreneurial resume.
It hit me today, though… that the SOURCE of imposter syndrome is REALLY how we see other people, PARTICULARLY people we learn from.
Take me, for example.
I NEVER pretend to be perfect…
or “all together…”
or FANCY..
or ANYTHING remotely akin to some made up version of entrepreneurial perfection.
And yet,
and yet,
people STILL tend to ASSUME that I’m this magical, charmed being.
You know…
- someone who NEVER battles personal hurdles, hardships and heartbreak,
- someone who miraculously NEVER has moments of doubt or overwhelm or VERY poorly attended pity parties.
- someone who never wakes up and thinks, “you know… I got NOTHING… nothing to say, nothing to share, nothing to give.”
- someone SO “lucky” to never battle inner demons, discouragement, or disappointment.
- someone who ALWAYS feels on, inspired, excited.
Yeah, no.
This week, full of all of the above…
(except for the “feeling on, inspired, excited piece.)
=) #ofcourse And it’s only Wednesday. lol…
Yet, I still show up.
#ofcourse
NOT because I have a commitment to my to do list.
But because SHOWING UP is who I AM…
who I have DELIBERATELY become.
A leader.
Who shows up.
Who makes her work more important than her mood…
who makes her people more important than her pout…
A grown up who realized
that I didn’t have to FEEL LIKE doing something…
to actually just DO the thing.
I can choose.
To act, ABSENT emotion.
And so can you.
In fact, you DO choose.
Every day, we ALL choose.
We choose to live INTO the greatest version of ourselves,
OR
coddle and curate a book of excuses…
of why we can’t,
or can’t now.
Those who do the former are seen as unicorns of talent and discipline, when really… it’s a choice we can ALL make.
While I’m on a roll, let’s talk talent.
I don’t have any magical skills, not one.
For example: I AM a writer…
and I write well…
and I write fast…
because I write DAILY.
Every single day.
Multiple times a day.
PROBABLY 2000 words a day… on average.
I also studied copy writing,
I studied copy writers,
I practiced and ROUTINELY put out imperfect work…
and so,
NOW…
years into this process,
it looks effortless.
Something YOU do — day in and day out without fail– ALSO looks effortless to those who don’t do it daily.
So, if you are suffering from imposter syndrome, YES… remind yourself of ALL of your accomplishments. And then, look at ALL of those you learn from and look up to… and KNOW that they have NOTHING that you don’t have.
They just get up and choose.
They practice daily.
They step up to the plate and swing hard..
striking out a lot, as it turns out.
OFTEN, when they don’t EXACTLY “feel like it.”
And this…
is something available to us all.
If YOU are ready to create new habits and routines,
based on SOLID (& SIMPLE) TIMELESS marketing and sales PRINCIPLES,
and you’re ready to LEAP into YOUR FUTURE…
as the LEADER you know you are,
