Let me start with raw, uninhibited honesty. It BAFFLES me to see a woman who considers herself an entrepreneur (or even “just” a business owner) who will do all manner of things to “grow her empire,” but shies away from selling.
(The exact thing REQUIRED
to grow her empire.)
Frankly, it feels a bit entitled.
And spoiled.
And, I’ll just say it, weak.
HINT: All of the things you’re chasing INSTEAD OF SALES…
the affirmation…
the validation…
the friendships, even…
the recognition…
They all come FASTER
with SALES.
Plus, you know…
you can actually be PROUD of your business…
not as a cute little “project”
but as a business,
you know…
something that produces a profit and funds a lifestyle.
As I look around the internet, I am AMAZED at the LENGTHS women entrepreneurs will go to in order to AVOID selling.
- “Learning.” Oh, isn’t this a fun one? We will get all sorts of degrees and certifications and certificates and WHATEVER in the name of growing our business… which — incidentally– I don’t have a problem with. BUT…. did you know??? Have you HEARD??? that you can actually sell WHILE learning? I had one woman tell me that, for her, it wasn’t about selling. In fact, she proudly spent 2 years learning about the products her MLM sold. #Gotit #husbandfunded #enoughsaid
- Sharing CUTE Quotes and “truth bombs” from OTHER leaders online… scheduling that crap out… while NEVER sharing YOUR truth bombs with the world.
- Showing up at ALL the right events and paying to get pics with ALL the right people… hoping, you know…. that they’ll see you, notice you, and what??? Appoint you as something? Bring you into their OWN thing? I thought YOU had a thing, friend.
- Offering “free consults” all while PROMISING never to sell them anything. #volunteerhours (Incidentally, this is one from my own playbook… back when I thought sales were CRASS in some way. Due to the POWER of being BROKE, I did however learn to sell BEST when I wasn’t “allowed” to sell, lol… )
- Doing ALL you can to promote your “brand…” The online summits, the radio shows, the podcasts… all to get that PERFECT amount of “attention” so you feel like you’re FINALLY “ready” to sell something.
- Polishing…and then re-polishing your social media profiles… earning TOP GRADES from the non-existent professor of professional profiles.. But without selling a SINGLE thing.
YUCK.
None of these things are bad,
when they are part of an actual,
activated,
consistent
SALES strategy.
But without SALES,
they are
JUST
BUSY
WORK.
They are little tasks that allow you to MISTAKE
busy-ness
with
accomplishment.
Sales give you PERMISSION to help your target market.
Sales allow you to roll up your sleeves and help someone.
Sales allows THEM to partner with YOU… to be “all in.”
Selling is an honorable thing to do, and it can even be FUN and FLOW-based. Selling does not need to be hard or crass or pressured… in fact, it shouldn’t be.
My philosophy is to take what you LOVE doing.
And turn it into a sales and marketing machine.
