COMING FROM “SIMPLE STOCK” DEFINITELY HAS ITS ADVANTAGES… LIKE NEVER NEEDING TO “ADD” OR “REMOVE” ANYTHING FROM MY 10+ YEAR OLD WEBSITE.
I remember sitting at a Shaklee home party when I was a teenager. At the time, Centrum was paying for a boat load of TV commercials announcing a NEW nutrient that had just been discovered and had now been ADDED to the Centrum multi-vitamin.
Two of my aunts and my Mom were selling Shaklee back then and they said something I’ll never forget to those sitting in the room.
“We didn’t have to add [said nutrient] to our multi-vitamin… because our multi-vitamins are WHOLE FOOD supplements. So, even though this was just discovered, it’s been in our vitamins the entire time.”
As I type this out, it doesn’t seem to REALLY convey the power of this statement, and the lingering impact it had on me.
But, here’s what I heard:
Because our vitamins are SIMPLE,
because they aren’t chemicals that have been isolated and then put back together,
because our vitamins are based on NATURE,
you can trust them.
You’ll never have to ADD something to them,
or take anything OUT.
What is simple is sustainable,
What is simple is time tested,
what is simple is DEPENDABLE.
That’s what I heard.
Not surprisingly, simplicity is a guiding principle of my business today.
I was always into SIMPLICITY.
I come from (very) simple stock.
My Grandad was a sharecropper with a 4th grade education.
My grandmothers WORKED… not because they were oh-so-empowered
or ahead of their time…
but because the lights had to stay on and they had to keep food in the fridge.
My SIMPLE upbringing led me to TRUST what was simple,
what was unadulterated,
what was un-shiny,
what was time-tested and battle-approved.
I learned EARLY that it was MY JOB to seek and to SEE opportunities.
I learned EARLY to work for CASH, not experience or acceptance or approval.
I learned EARLY to work hard and to work as if your work MEANT something.
I learned EARLY that work — ALL work — was a NOBLE pursuit.
I learned EARLY to show up daily. (Ready to work.)
I learned EARLY to bet on myself.
I learned EARLY to be honest and authentic.
I learned EARLY the pride of a job well done.
I learned EARLY that success could be built.
Block by block.
Step by step.
By me.
That there was no EASY button.
That there WAS no substitute for doing the work or for showing up.
And so, as I re-do my website in the next few weeks….
I can read articles that I wrote 10 years ago…
that are still true and 100% relevant today.
