I could have titled this a million different ways. How being a small business owner keeps you young. The REAL feelings of any true entrepreneur. Why We Entrepreneurs Keep on Keeping on. Cue the music:
Isn’t this perfect?
YEAH… We’re happy, free, confused and lonely… in the best way! It’s miserable and magical, oh yeah!
We’re happy and free! No boss for us! No “requesting a vacation day.” No calling in when our kids are sick! But, it can be confusing and lonely too! Sometimes, what worked brilliantly 3 months ago seems to fall on deaf ears today. And, MANY of us are working in isolation. (A huge benefit to WOW, by the way…. join us and never be without a tribe again!)
But the best, most accurate description is the miserable and magical part… YES, miserable and magical at the SAME time and in the BEST way. When you feel like everything you touch turns to crap…. it’s miserable. AND there’s no one to blame, either. It’s up to US to make these businesses work. But, oh when the magic happens… when the doors swing open when the new site goes live when the online payment “dings” hit your phone when the right buyers come at the right time when your clients achieve HUGE success when the media finally recognizes your work…. Magical indeed.
Perhaps it’s this buffet of experiences we’re drawn to as entrepreneurs. After all, we COULD choose a job. Our pay would be steady. Our confusion replaced with someone else’s agenda. Our loneliness cured by water cooler chats. Our “misery” and our “magic” both dulled…. perhaps even taken away.
In the words of life coach Taylor Swift, lol… “I don’t know about you… but I’m feeling 22.” I’m unwilling to throw away the exhilaration of being happy, free, confused and lonely… in the best way… I’m unwilling to forego the ecstasy and elation of wild success… of personal, breaking down barriers, no holds barred, no glass ceiling achievement.
Perhaps being an entrepreneur is REALLY the secret to staying young…. Who knows? Taylor’s song about being 22 seems to capture our world pretty succinctly, I think. But what about you? do you have a theme song? Lyrics that really get you pumped up? If so, please share in the comments below!
