One of my primary “secrets” to success is simply that I stayed the course when others quit. But also, I never showed up ANYWHERE in costume.
From day one, I showed up fully authentic,
fully true to my self.
No masks, no pretense.
I didn’t buy that “LA or NYC address” or — back then — the LA or NYC area code for my business phone to make myself look “big time.” =)
Keep in mind,
back then people did these things.
They “bought” a NYC address to….. what?
I’m not even sure, really. To look legit, I guess.
To me, it was silly.
I mean, people would QUICKLY find out you didn’t live in NYC. lol..
Anyway, I SORT of get it though.
This was back when the term “regional” was used to negatively describe people like me. You know, people on a national stage who — because of how they dressed or how long their hair was, or because of their southern accent — were doomed to “never make it. They’re so REGIONAL.”
Here’s the deal.
I never tried to speak with non-regional diction.
I never once thought of not wearing jeans or boots.
I never thought about cutting my hair to make me “seem” or “look” more professional.
I never EVER showed up in costume, in anyway.
That’s part of it.
Because people who have nothing to prove,
people who are not vying for your approval or your applause,
people who are COMPLETELY confident REGARDLESS of your opinion of them…
are novelties still.
People notice.
And you can’t FAKE this level of self-assurance. You have to BUILD it, OWN it. It has to be real.
So, secret #1: Start (AND STAY) you.
Secret #2? Just STAY.
There have been a lot of “personalities” in my space that have come and gone. A couple that attempted LITERALLY to take my spot. I was even told once, “They want to be the next Michelle Pippin.” My response, “Good luck.”
You see,
no one will EVER beat you at being you.
NO one is a better Michelle Pippin than me. =)
I stayed.
And stayed and stayed.
I simply outlasted them.
Hustling, messaging, serving,
and also
STAYING.
There’s VALUE in being the grizzled veteran in a space that births — and buries — experts at a dizzying space.
