vs. what they SAID.
Often, quickly identifying the bull feces being peddled (and readily) gobbled up by otherwise smart people who were willfully ignoring the growing stench.
The truth is, you can learn an awful lot by IGNORING the commercial and PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION to the (almost ALWAYS visible) “behind the scenes” action.
And here it goes…

That I’ve been holding IN for WAY TOO LONG.
My Things That Make You Go Hmmm….. LIST.
- Mark Zuckerberg taking out full page ads in EVERY STATE including the Wall Street Journal and USAToday and doing a 2-hour interview on CNN to get his message out. =) Maybe Facebook SHOULDN’T be counted on as YOUR only mode of communication either… ya think? #irony
- The Social Media person — with 242 followers on twitter — who is pitching me on how to get 20,000 followers on twitter. #icanseeyou
- The Marketing Firm of “experts…” CHARGING YOU MONEY to market your business…. all while EACH member of the team is working a J.O.B. to pay their own expenses. (Umm… I bet that person paying you is hoping you can market EFFECTIVELY enough to keep THEM from having to get a job, but what do I know?)
- GOOGLE, FACEBOOK, and MICROSOFT spending a collective 71% of their marketing budget on….. wait for it….. REAL TV. #eyesOPENyet? Stay with me. Collectively, a whopping 86% of their marketing spend is spent on OFFLINE marketing efforts. Hmmmm….. I wonder how much of YOUR marketing budget their sales people would encourage YOU to spend on offline? #watchwhatpeopleDO
- The E-COMMERCE conference marketing through a 57-page PRINT brochure. This is an online company marketing to OTHER online company owners… BUT NOT using ONLINE to do it.
I’m almost done.
- The Google Ads person who showed up at my office door (door to door sales) to sell me a GOOGLE AD. Why doesn’t google ads sell through google ads????
- The person who calls his online success system (that allows you to make money without ever leaving the house — his tagline, not mine) the “magic money machine…” selling said money machine via a series of LIVE events which require him not only leaving the house but traveling, dressing up, etc. Why DID he leave his own magic money machine behind???
- The EVERYTHING DIGITAL CONFERENCE…. marketing said DIGITAL conference via a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal.
- The ONLINE GIANT in the vacation rental space… AirBNB, marketing via a glossy print magazine, sent via snail mail.
- The executive coach doling out relationship advice, confidently, when this is the EXACT (maybe ONLY ) AREA they’ve NOT seen any success in themselves… #JEEZ… #referthemout
Okay…. I’m done.
My point isn’t to DEMEAN these companies for doing what works.. OBVIOUSLY, we should ALL follow suit. Outside of being sure we’re in INTEGRITY, we should be SWITZERLAND when it comes to HOW our goals get accomplished…. which media we use, where we show up.
We need to do WHAT WORKS…
But often times,
In order to see what is REALLY working,
we MUST look beyond the commercial message…
peer BEHIND the curtain,
JUST A BIT.
To see if what they tell YOU to do,
Is really what is building THEIR success.
