I have recently had to confront something in myself…
something I never expected to see IN ME:
a nearly apologetic stance when it comes to work.
Now, I used to apologize for working all the time. “I’m so sorry… Mommy has to work.” My first coach cured me of that one. 😊
Because the truth was, Mommy, LOVED her work. I loved what I did, even back then. I felt pride in providing for my family. I felt accomplished that I had somehow — starting 20 years ago, before this thing was more commonplace — replaced my full-time career income with some (often sloppy) compilation of home-based income that was created without ANY daycare or even regular sitter.
And, woman…
I WORKED.
I worked while everyone else slept.
I worked without a safety net.
I worked when I felt behind, overwhelmed, scared, anxious and sometimes even hopeless.
I worked when I was over-worked and then I worked some more.
And I NEVER felt apologetic about the work,
I mean…
this is how I was raised.
I believed (then and now) work to be noble.
In fact, I’ve never had to get on my kids to “get a job.” They work because working is what we DO… because no one owes us anything and because work is noble. Because there IS a sense of pride, accomplishment and confidence that comes from a paycheck.
BUT… even still,
even me,
I somehow grew the TINIEST bit apologetic about the hustle that wild success requires.
It all began with the PASSIVE REVENUE thing… and multiplied when the term “FLOW” was re-introduced. To be clear, I never got into the Passive Revenue movement. I refused to even ACKNOWLEDGE a couple of my income streams as passive.
Because they’re not “passive.”
They’re leveraged.
They took work and content and heart and testing…
and then all of this was LEVERAGED into recurring income.
So, not entirely passive.
Leveraged.
But then that FLOW phase rushed in like a tidal wave pushing against a work ethic that was on SOMEWHAT shaky ground already. Why was it shaky?
Well, for one… a lot of the investment and work and hustle that was sold to women entrepreneurs was busy work. It was sold convincingly by very bright and very shiny “leaders,” but it was untested. It was unproven… and when women did a TON of work only to find one or two sales… well, they grew discouraged.
And who wouldn’t?
They were working their fingers to the bone and the work…
didn’t work. But there was also this OLD rhetoric that this FLOW thing reinforced.
Women my age grew up watching commercials that reminded us to , “Never let ’em see you sweat.” The commercials (for deodorant) showed accomplished, sophisticated, beautiful women with the message, “Never let ’em see you sweat.”
As if it were a bad thing…
to be seen HUSTLING after something you wanted.
to be seen laying out for a catch,
to be seen in PURSUIT of what you want.
As the flow phase started coming into vogue, two things began happening:
1) I began to hear some pushback against the word HUSTLE. “I don’t resonate with that word.” “I just bristle against the term hustle.” lol…
and
2) I ALSO began to see the benefits of the FLOW approach to business. I began to see the financial profit and personal peace of no longer PUSHING so HARD so CONSISTENTLY.
And so I began to incorporate some FLOW into my own personal strategy. I began to focus largely on mindset. And, I made more money and had more time.
KEEP IN MIND, though…
in my case,
THE MINDSET STUFF…
was overlaid
onto an established
and accomplished
years-long compilation
of solid marketing and sales strategy
that was ALREADY in action.
So, did it work?
Swimmingly. I was a FLOW convert,
😊
Never IN LEU of work,
not even in leu of hard work,
but in addition to it.
But then something happened.
I feel like I settled too far into the flow.
I somehow got into this “never let ’em see you sweat” mentality,
and it began to show up in my bank account.
And what’s more????
I was FREAKING BORED.
Uninspired.
Unchallenged.
Dare I say it, I was restless.
That’s when it hit me.
I LIVE for the hustle.
For me, it is TRULY the thrill of the fight that lights me up…
I do it for the love of the game.
I LOVE the hustle,
and just like in real life,
I feel MOST ALIVE when the sweat soaks my shirt so badly I can’t even find a dry spot to wipe my face.
The impact of Passive and FLOW
is that it has shortchanged women by
encouraging us to look the part,
rather than stand tall and proud
— albeit sweaty and bruised —
in the ring.
It has ATTEMPTED to separate cause from effect,
making success MYSTERIOUS
rather than predictable.
It threatens to rob us of
the thrill of the fight,
the satisfaction of a GOOD HONEST sweat,
the the pride of a win.
The answer isn’t NO FLOW,
the answer is GO FLOW, baby!!
You go,
and then you FLOW.
AND whoever sees you sweat,
let it inspire them, woman!
And if it doesn’t inspire them,
let it inspire YOU…
because we’re not ALL cut out for this.
We’re not ALL born to lead, to battle, to create, to inspire.

and you know it.
