I’ve written before about the little games I play while out on my runs. =) I race cars. I know I’m going to lose every single time, of course, unless I literally sprout wings and learn to fly.
BUT YESTERDAY….
music pumping in my ears,
arms pumping by my side,
legs going faster than ever…
I see the car I’ve picked out to race nearing the “finish line”
(The finish line is the telephone pole we’re both heading towards from opposite directions…
whoever crosses it first, wins.)
and I am ASTONISHED…
I literally think I may win this one.
So, I run faster, harder and feel ALMOST like I’m flying.
I am ELATED.
I can hardly believe it.
A natural born competitor,
every cell in my body is buzzing.
And then I realize…
The car I’ve chosen to race, has started to slow down to make a turn.
The car is now stopped.
Lol..
I’m not winning after all.
=)
My elation turns to amused disappointment
in just a SPLIT SECOND…
and then to an AHA moment.
I’ve felt this way MANY times in my entrepreneurial journey. Someone says YES to an offer.
Elation.
Excitement.
Everything’s great.
Payment doesn’t come in.
Disappointment.
Anxiety.
Frustration.
Payment comes in…
Elation.
Relief.
But now you need another sale.
You put out a couple proposals.
But you hear nothing back.
Disappointment.
Anxiety.
Frustration.
Just like in my pretend race.
In the entrepreneurial journey, it’s not uncommon to go from elation to disappointment… and then back again…. in just a moment.
The woman entrepreneur whose BUOY is secure,
who navigates these waves without being overtaken by them,
is the one who survives and thrives.
That is why it is CRITICAL for women entrepreneurs to establish — for themselves — a safe harbor position.
AN EMOTIONAL SAFE HARBOR…
meaning..
you don’t need your business to provide you with self esteem,
or confidence,
or surety.
Emotionally, you are secure, you are safe.
Their yes,
or their NO,
can create excitement or disappointment,
but it has NO bearing on your self-worth or inner confidence.
Your EMOTIONAL wellbeing is a burden your business was NEVER meant to bare. A woman in an EMOTIONAL SAFE HARBOR position is one whose business if FREE to SOAR.
A FINANCIAL SAFE HARBOR.
Neediness is a deal killer.
Living below your means is CRITICAL to eliminating neediness, and going into EACH proposal or negotiation with a “no matter what” confidence.
A SOCIAL SAFE HARBOR.
Your business is created to produce a profit.
Your business should accept MONEY as payment.
Not applause,
not affirmation,
not acceptance,
not friendship.
It was never meant to produce such things, and taxing your business with these social needs is a costly mistake. A woman with a SOCIAL SAFE HARBOR gets paid… and is respected… But does NOT rely on her business to bring her a crowd of friends or acquaintances.
The entrepreneurial journey is one of the most rewarding journey to take. It grows you. It challenges you. It shows you what you are made of…. but without a secure SAFE HARBOR position in these areas, it can get all sorts of mucked up.
