There’s a certain point in labor,
during which you know that the time has come,
for you to do YOUR part,
for you to PUSH.
Nature has gotten you this far.
Your baby has courageously navigated down that tiny birth canal, inching towards the unknown,
leaving ALL she has EVER known,
her anxiety about the future
ONLY quelled by your voice,
the voice she’s been hearing for months now,
quite possibly one of only two voices she knows, intimately.
And she’s inching down, because that’s HER part.
Of course, YOUR part is to push.
To PUSH…until.
and I remember being “mildly” lol.. terrified.
How could THAT
come out of THIS?
And yet, I couldn’t NOT push.
In fact, I was bearing down, pushing INSTINCTIVELY,
sub-consciously even.
I remember the midwife saying something about me pushing and only THEN realizing what I was doing.
Try telling a woman who has the natural desire,
the instinct,
to push… NOT to push.
You can ONLY do this to a woman who has been NUMBED, ANESTHETIZED from the waist down. lol…. You can command her silence and her inaction ONLY because she is anesthetized to what is going on.
if you can FEEL that baby working her way out, there’s no “wait until the doc gets in the room to push.” You push because you literally can’t not.
Because un-anesthetized,
as long as we can FEEL what’s going on,
we will ALWAYS birth what is inside of us.
I have so many places I want to go with this. I may stay here all week with members in our #EntrepreneurialEspresso moments together.
There’s the FIRST question of what do we KNOW desires to be birthed from us — what message, what offer, what STANCE, what position, what AUTHENTIC, UNEDITED brand, what posture — that we may be trying to anesthetize????
Because we’re afraid of the pain?
Because we’ve never been there before?
Because of the unknown?
And also….
for those of us who KNOW we’re born creators,
born leaders,
born artists,
born messengers,
HOW are we anesthetizing?
How are YOU anesthetizing?
How are we escaping the pain,
escaping the DESIRE to push, to birth, to create?
how are we dialing down the URGE that is natural within us?
I’ll be very honest.
I work with women.
And I’ve worked with women for a long time.
Tens of thousands of women over the years.
And of course, I’ve watched myself. (OFTEN with a mild sense of horror… )
I’ve seen some anesthetizing in the form of alcohol and drugs.
(Prescription or otherwise.)
I’ve seen some anesthetizing in the form of choosing to remain a victim. (As long as you believe you are absolutely powerless, you are free to do nothing.)
I see a LOT of anesthetizing in the form of BUSY-ness,
or preparation. (Not ready, not ready, getting ready, almost ready…. 5 years later, still getting ready.)
Anesthetizing with food.
With distractions.
With running from conference to conference,
hopping from mentor to mentor,
hoping to start ALL over
in the prep phase with a new mentor,
and — of course —
avoid the ACTUAL birthing process.
And I GET IT.
For one, anything you BIRTH has to be named,
has to be CARED for,
and will ultimately take on a life of its own.
People will see it,
— your art, your message, your SOUL —
and they will judge it.
As silly,
as not enough,
as too this or too that.
And as soon as it is birthed
— your art, your message, your SOUL —
you’ll see the people’s reaction to it.
You’ll see whether they LOVE it,
or hate it.
You’ll see whether they BUY to get closer
or UNFOLLOW because you hit their oh-so-senstive button.
And yet
if you are like me,
and I have a feeling you ARE,
you can not
NOT push.
You MUST.
It’s URGENT.
It’s NATURAL.
Un-anesthetized, you MUST push.
