In full disclosure, a — revealing — article about me and about my business will soon go live, be shared and be made VERY public. I don’t have exact dates, but soon. I don’t mind saying that I want to get ahead of the spin. I want to give more details, provide more context. So, here we go.
The truth is now hitting the (online, and off in certain industries) business world. Sales are DEFINITELY still happening, but even experienced businesses are seeing lower conversion rates, 3-5 sales per webinar when they used to count on minimum 20. The frustration (and fear) is palpable and the response to this “hard times” is admirable.
Businesses are DOUBLING DOWN on showing up, an effort I applaud.
But here’s the deal…
even as you show up with more consistency,
doing webinars,
sharing online events,
blogging,
sharing links to your podcasts,
doing all the reels
and being BOLDER in your calls to action…
but you’re doing it all virtually…
you are speaking to a VERY Crowded and NOISY space.
A space that isn’t just crowded with prospects, but crowded with competitors and just competing voices… each clamoring for YOUR MARKET’s attention, each willing to pay and scream and literally strip down nude JUST for an extra like or share… let alone purchase.
AND WHEN YOUR MARKET IS IN THIS CHAOTIC ENVIRONMENT, two things happen:
1) The are CONFUSED. They are hearing so many options, ideas and arguments. They may even COME TO THE online arena with the intention to BUY what you sell, but once they get in…they’re quickly hit with so many options they PROCRASTINATE. They put off the decision. They’ll come back later.
2) They become BRAND BLIND. You know those commercials about being “nose blind” to the stench in your own house? It’s like that. They see YOU and all of your (less experienced, less integrity) competitors AS THE SAME. They literally think, “omg, another _____________?)
Not only do you risk being drowned out by all of the noise, you also risk being lumped into a big pile of your competitors.
So, yes I am thought DUMB
or perhaps even “not with it.”
Because I don’t invest a lot of effort HERE re: my business.
The truth is, I’m anything BUT dumb,
I have LONG benefited from being UNDER estimated,
and my “dumb, archaic” marketing is FORMULAIC.
Bottomline: I make my money elsewhere.
SURE, I have an “online” business, but only in the sense that I offer a digital “coaching container” for the baddest ass women in the world. SURE, i’m here… writing to you now, but if you think that THIS is how I make my money, well…
… well, you’re in danger of spending WAY TOO MUCH time, money, blood, sweat and tears here, trying valiantly to break through the noise, get attention and then convert the interested into the committed…
DO sales happen here? And on other social media channels and other online spaces? Yes of course.
But I’m not foolish enough to start building a house here on land that I’ll never own. I take these sales as “gravy.” My REAL money, the client generating ENGINES i’ve built are ALWAYS working elsewhere.
Again, to some,
the leader of Women Who WOW,
the ONLINE Alliance for seriously driven women entrepreneurs
is FOOLISH not to be spending more time and more money here.
But you know who else is / was
at first glance
considered foolish?
Apple when they put computer stores in malls.
HR block when they also went into retail locations.
AirBNB when they started mailing out full color old-school catalogs.
Bottom line: I’m a grizzled veteran. I have learned copywriting from the BEST. I have MAJOR “chops” when it come to marketing AND selling. I COULD play on this battlefield and win MORE than I do. lol…
But I prefer not.
I PREFER to go where my competitors are not,
to speak in a room that is far quieter,
to sell in a vacuum, without the interference of random (and competing) noise and offers.
SO WHAT DO I DO, EXACTLY?
Where do I compete?
Where do I show up as a WELCOME guest (vs. an annoying pest?)
First, I make it my business to know MY market (the driven woman entrepreneur) more intimately than anyone else knows her. This goes beyond knowing what motivates her, what emotions she’s pursuing (and running from), what she hates and what she wants.
I ALSO KNOW who else she is listening to.
So, I made a list of other businesses who:
1) had the attention of my market — preferably en masse or at SOME scale;
2) did not compete with me; AND
3) made MORE money when their clients stayed in business and made more money.
Point #3 is instructive.
Let’s take co-working spaces. What happens when their renters start losing money or doubting their business vision? Well, leases are cancelled early that’s what.
What about bookkeeping agencies? Agencies that outsource virtual assisting services? What happens when their clients can’t figure out how to keep steady sales? They stop paying for assistance.
Same concept for legal and financial experts serving the entrepreneur, those selling technology and apps to the entrepreneur, those building websites and producing podcasts for the woman entrepreneur.
ALL of these little niche industries do better when their clients are more confident and certain in their business and in their business income in particular. YET, many do not offer anything that competes with WOW in any way.
AND there are industry specific agencies performing nearly ALL of these services.
So, I find these small little stages. MOST of them host me virtually… not on some massive platform, but in a zoom room or a small niched podcast, or in a newsletter their clients are PAYING to receive (and therefore paying attention to.)
And then I do the following:
1) I get to know the audience owner. Literally I get curious about them, their business, their uniqueness.
2) I MAIL them something, usually from Women Who WOW sponsors just as a cool, fun way to set WOW apart in their mind.
3) I stay in contact with them, and I ALWAYS offer something exclusive to their market. Something that will help them feel more confident and certain about their business and business income.
WHY? Because this makes them better, longer clients for the audience owner.
YES, this is formulaic.
YES it works. I show up without competition, in a room of people WAITING to hear from me, and get to SHOW them how WOW does it differently, not using a slick sales page but by how **I** show up.
COULD i battle it out here on all the socials? Pay thousands each month to stay one step ahead of whatever algorithm change is made all while wondering if one day they’ll ban me without so much as a “sorry to see you go” letter? I could.
But my system is better. More profitable. Less chaotic. Brings FAR better clients.
So, I think I’ll keep going, on the SAME tracks I laid down in the EARLIEST days of my business. Risking what? Being gossiped about as some pitiful dinosaur? look, I’ll take that reputation all the way to the bank. Literally.
If you’d like to work with me to get YOUR profit back on track there is NO BETTER TIME to join Women Who WOW. We have an incredible intensive coming up, called PROFIT FAST.
