Whenever a woman entrepreneur is struggling income wise, I look for this sales killer. And — HONEST TO GOD– it is ALWAYS present.
It is the
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS syndrome.
They show up and do the work online.
They do live streams,
blog,
they create and post memes.
Girl, they look GOOD,
and CONSISTENT,
even PROFESSIONAL.
But when it comes to SELLING,
they are blurring the friend line.
It gets weird,
and they feel it.
Everyone feels it.
They feel odd about selling to friends,
and yet…
every professional contact they make
somehow slides into a friend category.
And also… somehow,
despite their “work,”
their list isn’t growing
so they find themselves always selling to the same people.
In sales conversations, the otherwise confident professional you see online is getting confused.
The tone, the offer, the pricing…
ALL of it gets somehow “off” because they haven’t CLEARED UP the whole “friends with benefits” thing.
Note that this friends line is HARDER & more BLURRED when you’re selling mental real estate. (Coaching, consulting, etc,.) TYPICALLY “friends” don’t expect you go give them FREE oils, supplements, smell goods, clothes, jewelry etc.
The solution isn’t a step by step, hard and fast line we ALL draw. It’s different for everyone, but you MUST decide where your line is.
Here are a few tips:
👉 ONLY give away what you WANT to give away. If you feel angst about it, don’t give it away. People often ask me how **I** do this so well, and it comes down to ONLY giving away what I feel GREAT about giving away.
👉 Have language around when someone is pushing the boundaries. Example: “I only make recurring appointments with clients. Are you interested in ongoing coaching or just a friendly chat?” is GREAT code for: NO, I will not make a recurring appointment with you to coach you for free because we’re friendly.
👉 Consider if the generosity extends both ways. Like, are you ALSO using unpaid services they typically sell?
👉 REALLY look into where you are accepting acceptance, affirmation, and friendship in leu of real payment in your business.
👉 Make it about THEM. Do they need to pay to be REALLY in? In truth i have ONLY regretted giving away ONE program. Why? The person NEEDED to pay in order to be INVESTED. Because they didn’t, they did almost NONE of the work… and got (of course) almost NONE of the benefit.
👉BE SURE you are actively, daily building your list… and attracting NEW prospects into your space. This ALLOWS you to have NO financial need that can cloud your judgement regarding the “friend” line.
