What to do indeed!!
I DAILY study success.
In my industry and in others.
In my generation and the many generations that came before me.
And I CAN NOT be the only one who has actually, regularly been DE-motivated by business success stories, can I?
You know, the kind that start with some driven — but poor — kid who chooses to live in his car in Silicon Valley… only to get some measure of financial success that costs him his health and his young family…
Or the ones that share with you the SECRET of their success…. which is carefully and painstakingly dotting every eye and crossing every T, and filling EVERY funnel and hiring teams of employees to oversee all of this.
Or the ones that will readily — and cheerfully — admit that they are working from dawn until dark… as some entrepreneurial badge of honor… while they brag about their income.
Or — and this is the last one — the ones who are literally on the road every single week…. schlepping from airport to airport, gig to gig, and posting all about their “laptop life.” =)
Truth is, I’m entirely and wholly unwilling to do ANY of this for ANY amount of time.
I can’t go back in time and become the single girl who could take huge risks (like living in my car or traveling to some place I can live like a queen on $12 a day or something.)
I am stubbornly unwilling to build a business that will cost me my health or my marriage or my family.
I am ruthlessly defiant and REFUSE to be BUSY in the name of business… and I DETEST leaving the house as well as diligently dotting i’s and crossing t’s.
If I believed that THIS is what success required,
I’d say
COUNT ME OUT.
If THIS is what is required,
just put me on the public dole, and call it a day.
But, the truth is,
I’ve NEVER believed I had to do ANYTHING
that I didn’t want to do
in order to succeed,
in ANY arena.
In high school, my attendance was,
how do you say it,
“of concern.”
In college, I literally worked it out with dozens of professors to NOT attend their class… to just take the tests required and not have to show up. Thinking I couldn’t do it, they’d agree…. always cautioning me about how IMPORTANT it was to attend class. lol…
When I graduated from college, I never believed I had to “start” In one job in order to earn my way into the job I wanted. I just went straight there…. later learning I was the first person they’d ever hired for that position out of college.
When speaking, I never believed I had to wear a damn suit in order to make a bunch of money. I wore / wear jeans. And / or a sun dress or a black dress. And boots. Or a cool pair of heels. Let the suits go somewhere else.
I’ve always thought that rules
even (to be transparent) laws
were there for “other” people,
those who had no imagination,
no self control,
no WILL to SELF-GOVERN.
And — also —
that I could do what I wanted,
how I wanted,
when I wanted,
and still create the life I wanted,
the success I wanted.
And, so I’m surprised when I STILL bump up against beliefs that I have to do this or that in order to grow this empire of mine. Beliefs that hold me back, or make me feel DREAD about what I (think I) MUST do.
We would all be WELL served by challenging our own beliefs… and then, in most cases, re-writing them.
For instance, do you believe that wild success will require you to work and hustle 12 – 15 hours a day? Do you believe that to have the wealth you want may change you… and not for the better? Do you believe that the LEVEL of success you are after will cost you your health or your family or other things that are important? Do you believe you have to do 18000 things a day to reach the goals you’ve set for yourself?
This does not have to be YOUR story.
