I live in a tourist hotbed. Every summer our little town is infiltrated with “northerners” seeking the rural beauty of our beaches. They love our slow pace, and I don’t blame them. But I was running the other day listening to Colt Ford (for the uninitiated, he’s a country rapper.) and I joked with someone that the following of his lyrics should be on a sign as you cross into the state:
“WE DON’T CARE WHERE YOU FROM
AS LONG AS YOU POLITE,
CUZ WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE,
EVERY ONE OF US WILL FIGHT.”
In general, we’re an easy going bunch down here. We don’t care who you are, what color you are, how much money you make, or where you come from, “as long as you polite.” =)
Colt Ford isn’t one of those country converts.
He grew up country, like me.
It’s not an act that he puts on to sell songs.
He doesn’t know any other way to be.
You can tell through lyrics like this,
“every one of us WILL fight.”
You see, there’s a big difference between “I can fight”
and “I will fight.”
“I CAN fight” simply implies an ability.
It can refer to you being in Tae Bo 5 days a week at the local country club.
“I WILL fight” is different.
This indicates a willingness,
a certain confidence rooted in being tried and tested,
and willing to bet on yourself.
I’ve only HAD to fight once.
But there were other times when my unobscured WILLINGNESS to fight ended the other person’s bravado without further incident.
Because it’s not about your ability.
In THEORY, we all believe we are ABLE.
It’s about your WILLINGNESS to bet on yourself,
it’s about your willingness to go all in,
it’s about your willingness to stare into the eyes of an obstacle,
with such determination,
that the obstacle WILTS in cowardice
at the resolve in your eyes.
You see,
Most obstacles on your entrepreneurial journey
in life actually,
are like this.
They are like a “roaring (male) lion seeking who they may devour.”
Only, male lions don’t really do much attacking.
The female lions do that.
In fact, a common hunting technique is for the male lion to ROAR for all the poor guy’s worth…
and scare the prey into running away from it,
while the TRUE predators, the females
are lying in wait,
to do some real damage.
So, are you WILLING today?
To stare down your own discouragement?
Are you willing today to go all in.. AGAIN?
And AGAIN if necessary?
Are you willing to stare at whatever obstacle’s in front of you with a look that says, “Honey… you showed up at the wrong place on the wrong day.”
Because A LOT of people are born for so much more than they ever experience or accomplish.
MOST people, actually.
But being BORN for it doesn’t mean it will happen.
Being BORN for it simply means — for you — it CAN happen… whatever “it” is.
WILL it happen?
Well, that’s up to you.
You are able. No doubt.
Your time is now. Of course.
BUT, are you willing?
To do what it takes for AS LONG AS it takes?
That’s what separates those who LEAD from those who perpetually PLAN to lead.
That’s what separates those who are “gonna” leave their jobs from those that do.
That’s what separates those who experience wild success, and well…. everyone else.
