First, a quote, “You can make yourself feel better with awards, but you can’t buy a boat with them.” — Dan S. Kennedy (Magnetic Marketing|No B.S. Inner Circle)
Samuel L. Jackson doesn’t win many Academy awards, and he’s totally fine with that. He says, “I don’t do ‘Oscar-bait’ films. it’s a bunch of Hollywood assholes giving each other awards for films nobody even goes to see.”
His quote, not mine. So, what DOES Samuel L. Jackson measure, if not awards?
MONEY.
He’s one of the actors who can DEPENDABLY produce movies that gross a boat-load of money. Recently, he argued, “The Oscars should have a category for ‘Movie that Made The Most Money This Year’ and that would also be the best movie of the year. Everything else is bullshit.”
His TRUE argument?
It’s the movie BUSINESS and in a business, the only judge that counts is the marketplace.
I happen to agree whole-heartedly.
This may be a bit “rough” for your PARTICULAR sensibilities, but there’s a certain truth to it. YOU may not LOVE the idea of making “it” about the money.
You may bristle at that….
BUT, in business, here’s what I firmly believe:
Your INCOME should REFLECT the value you bring to the world.
So, my question to you is:
Does yours? Does your INCOME reflect all of the value you’re bringing into your world?
Are you DEMANDING and ORCHESTRATING an even value exchange??? OR are you giving and giving and accepting the crumbs from your market’s table?
I used to give and give… and hope that some sort of “business karma” caught back up to me… all while I lived on finances WELL BELOW the value I was giving.
P.S. How do you KNOW you’re here? On the outside, you’re smiling, but secretly… you RESENT your market for not buying. I was RIGHT THERE for too long. But NOW, everyone who doesn’t respond, or puts off investing in their business, or blames someone else saying they need “Permission” to spend X….
I STILL smile visibly, but i’m also smiling on the inside. They weeded themselves OUT of my ideal tribe. No resentment AT ALL.
Back to our regularly scheduled programming… What do you MEASURE?
As an entrepreneur, you have ONE CORE DUTY: To sell.
ONE accounting “yardstick:” income.
Because — and here’s the core driver behind this whole post — only when YOU ask and THEY say YES, can you really help or serve them.
Income, Impact and Influence are INEXPLICABLY entwined. Period.
