Sometimes I think it is literally (a flaw) written in to girl culture.
You know how they say cats have 9 lives?
Well, I went to high school with a girl who (I guess) had 9 virginities. Because she was always, perpetually a virgin… Despite, you know, having sex.
A lot.
I thought that was extremely odd. The lying, when everyone KNEW it was a lie.
But, I’m 41 years old now. And I still see this weird culture of shame and lying and hiding. Women in their 40s all denying having sex with their boyfriends… until ONE of them cracks and then they all admit to “doing it.” =)
But also, in the entrepreneurial world.
Admittedly, Women Who WOW is full of bold, courageous, authentic women. TRUTH is our code. We tell the truth to each other, and we expose the cracks in our own armor to truth as well. We expose our own fears and shame and struggles to the LIGHT of TRUTH, because that is where we grow, that is where we SHIFT.
Because THIS type of woman is “the norm” for me, I am often shocked at the games I hear from women outside of our world. The playing pretend, the lying, the “acting tough” that I thought was reserved for insecure pubescent boys. When I address it, when I say something TRUE that they are pretending doesn’t exist for them, they’re often shocked. And their shock ALWAYS leads to a LIST of confessions….
- We feel SHAME when money isn’t coming in like it needs to. (Um, yeah… we’ve all been there. We’re earners, producers, bad asses.)
- We feel FRUSTRATED when we’re doing all we were told to do and it…. JUST. ISN’T. WORKING. (Despite doing the work.) Again, we get it. We’ve all been there. We’re workers. We’re not looking for easy buttons. And — newsflash — most of what people tell you about business is wrong. (That’s why only 20% of here… succeeding, year after year.)
- We feel EMBARRASSED by the things we KNOW we need to do that aren’t getting done. Yep. Guilty. Me and everyone else.
- We feel (way) SMARTER than others who are way more successful and wonder (OFTEN) “What Gives?!?”
- We feel RESENTFUL when someone else “gets there” and we’re still treading water. I get it.
- We feel AFRAID… Quick note: this fear / anxiety often pops up right before a big breakthrough in business. It happens. It’s our little ego trying to keep us playing small and safe…. protecting the status quo. Feel the fear. Create wild success anyway.
BUT WHY ARE WOMEN STILL SO AFRAID TO COME CLEAN AND BARE OUR SOULS TO EACH OTHER?
And..
THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE WOMEN WHO WOW WHO BRING THEIR TRUTH TO OUR COMMUNITY EACH AND EVERY DAY.
But also, guys…
Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart.
If it were EASY,
if it didn’t come with FEAR
and ANXIETY
and some UnCERTAINTY…
NO ONE WOULD HAVE A JOB. =)
We’d all be self-bossers.
Because “they” can’t IMAGINE how we left that job.
How we wake up every single day and go out to CREATE an income and a life for ourselves.
With NO guarantees.
“They” think that we must not feel these things…
The fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty.
They think we’re different. or maybe EVEN that we’ve got money coming in from some “secret source.”
And somehow, we take this “persona” of having it all together into our relationships with other ‘treps, OUR OWN PEOPLE.
WE PRETEND to be the girl who has it all together,
who never feels fear,
who has never had to choke down anxiety to get through a launch,
who has never had to regroup when something HUGE didn’t work out,
who has never had to GUT OUT a day at work when our hearts were broken by our spouse or significant other, or when we’re burdened for one of our kids.
Two things:
1) NO ONE is helped by this game of pretend; and
