Woody Allen’s famous line, “Eight percent of success is showing up” may have been true when he said it originally. But, today… the world is different.
Can you succeed without showing up?
Of course not.
But, is showing up REALLY still 80% of success? I’d say most definitely not.
I see far too many business owners showing up, every day…. and failing to be profitable. They show up without a plan. They show up willing to accept “trade offs”, like APPEARING successful in leu of actual success. They show up with a “what’s available to me” attitude instead of one that says, “What will I create today?” They show up with a timidity that will always eat away at their potential and their profit. They show up with all sorts of grand schemes to reach “influencers” and win over the media, and get their name out there… and no deliberate strategies for making sales. They show up…. and they show up often and willing to work…. but it’s not enough.
Take ANYTHING worthwhile: Marriage, fitness, parenting… well… the same is true in those aspects of our lives as well. Many husbands and wives show up every day after work. But, showing up does not a marriage make. I could show up at the gym every day, grab a massage and a smoothie and go home… but it wouldn’t be enough. And as a parent, well… showing up is mandatory, yes… but certainly not enough.
In ALL areas of IMPORTANCE in our life, showing up IS a pre-requisite. But, it is NOT enough. And it won’t get you 80% of the way there, either. The way I see it, you must SHOW UP:
1) with a plan;
P.S. A plan is not a goal. A plan is a guide for action. What will you DO today and WHY?
2) with a bias towards quick action;
3) with a hungry determination that allows for small failures without derailing ultimate success;
4) with a very clear idea of what you want the outcome to be; and
5) without a willingness to accept anything less than what you want.
So, I guess it’s really HOW you show up that matters. How will you show up in your business today???
