Cheryl Tan — one of WOW’s original members — is a journalist turned entrepreneur.
Her mission is to empower business owners and give them the tools they need so they can share their stories with the world. In other words, she helps business owners generate one of their top “wishes:” media attention! Tapping into 20 years of experience in television news, Cheryl helps entrepreneurs connect with clients, customers, and — of course — the media.
You can and should grab your copy of her free report, “15 things you can do RIGHT NOW to get media attention for your business,” as well as weekly tips and strategies by signing up for Cheryl’s newsletter at CherylTanMedia.com.
Why WOW Loves Cheryl:
EVERY business owner would love the attention of the media… sharing their story, spreading their message, and helping them reach new clients or patients! Cheryl Tan offers other WOW members and all of her clients an insider’s perspective on how the media works. As a 20-year veteran of the news business, she brings insight on the inner workings of a newsroom that entrepreneurs wouldn’t get anywhere else. She knows how to get the media’s attention, and then how to coach entrepreneurs through their first or next media appearance. As the owner of Tan Media LLC, Cheryl figures out what makes companies unique and shows them how to package their stories to reach the attention of potential customers, as well as reporters at television stations, magazines and newspapers locally, regionally and nationally.
Why Cheryl Loves WOW:
Without a strong support system, a business owner can feel extremely isolated. And unproductive. To be truthful, a business owner can also get in his or her own way, by studying too much, thinking too much, worrying too much. A group of likeminded business people can help you see more clearly the path you should take. And this is important. A good group will push you so you actually walk along it. That’s why I love coming to WOW meetings. It forces me to plan for the moment when someone says, “So, what have you been up to?” That could the best form of accountability you have.
Why Cheryl Is A Self-Bosser:
The business world helps feed three of Cheryl’s passions. First, she loves people’s stories. She told thousands of them during her long career in television news and enjoys finding the angle that will resonate with an audience. As a reporter always on a tight deadline with a limited amount of storytelling airtime, she was able to get to the root of the story very quickly. That’s critical as audience attention span continues to dwindle. She enjoys finding that piece of the puzzle in an entrepreneur’s story. Critical, too, because a customer’s attention span is also sliding. Second, she loves results. She loves helping people realize their story has the possibility of lasting impact on someone else. Finally, like many entrepreneurs, Cheryl wanted the freedom to create a business and a life that serves her and her family.
Words of Wisdom For Other WOW Members:
My father always says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” I take this in many ways. It may not be pretty, but STARTING is the most important thing, especially in business. Make that call, create that ebook, launch that website, but start with something. I know I wouldn’t be here without the experiences that came before them. Did I need to be a one-man-band at my first TV station in Macon, Georgia? That meant I carried the camera, shot the video, edited the stories, and went on air, all in one day. That experience makes me appreciate all the more where I am today. And I’m thankful my first year in business is under my belt. There are many hills still to climb, but I’ll use the things I learned over the last 12 months to scale them (hopefully) more gracefully than before.
